Which is faster... my A64 X2 @ 2.6GHz or my e6300 C2D?

And how much would I need to OC the e6300 if it's slower at its default 1.86GHz?

My current pc is the AMD w/ 6150 onboard video.

The Intel box doesn't have onboard video and I just replaced an ancient Matrox Millenium PCI with a Radeon HD 4850 and I'm gonna move my day to day computing to the Intel.

I'm curious if the e6300 is a dog.

C2D's have about a 15-20% advantage clock per clock.

Overclock your E6300 to a modest 3.0-3.2ghz would stomp your AMD by a landslide @ 2.6.

And the e6300 is still a monster, and will most likely last you to neha mainstream if you dont need a quadcore processor.

The E6300 at 2.1GHz would about equal the X2 at 2.6GHz. And as aigo said, it's easy as pie to OC those things into the 3.0-3.2 GHz range. You don't need an especially powerful psu, just stable and reliable.

The HD 4850 doesn't use that much power, and neither does the E6300, even when overclocked (as long as you don't go crazy with the voltage).

500W would be more than enough. A quality 450W would probably be enough as well.
 
Good... cause I think I have a 450W drive hanging around... or maybe it's gone to my nephew? Hmmm...

Of course, that's because they had a PSU failure, not because it requires 1200W. People have been posting that they run 4850 crossfire on a high-quality 650W.

Just a note to the OP: Microcenter has the Antec Earthwatts 650W PSU for $70.

I did, however, find a deal at Buy.com for a Corsair TX650 at $80 after a $10 MIR. Then I got a $30 discount for opening up a VISA CC. With free shipping and supposing I get that rebate it'll cost me $50.
Unfortunately, I read a review of the TX750 that described it as electrically noisy. I also read that that PSU is made by CWT whereas the TX650 is made by SeaSonic.

I hope the TX650 is clean cause I want to OC my e6300.
