Which is faster for Starcraft: Cyrix M2 333 (actual 266) or Intel Pentium 1 233 MMX at 266?

So both cpu's will be running at 266 actual speed (3.5 x 75). This machine will only be playing Starcraft, no FPS's. Starcraft actually takes quite a bit of cpu power to run a large map with 8 players. Anybody have experience with this? Thanks.

I don't have experience, but as far as I know, starcraft is nearly all integer (its the AI, and I don't see anything that would require decimal places....) - therefore, the Cyrix should be faster *gasp*. If you ever want to do anything at all FPU intensive, the P55 will eat it for lunch.

BTW - its really 262 mhz :p

[EDIT]
I've played starcraft on a large 8 player map with 64mb of RAM. It did slow down a little bit, but when a player joined that had a faster CPU but less ram, the game chocked. Just make sure you have a lot of ram (at least 64mb), and I'd think you'd be fine with the Cyrix....plus it cracks RC5 faster ;-)

Hehe, yeah I know it's 262, but that's what the mobo says.

So Starcraft is also dependent on RAM? Crap. Right now I'm running on 32 megs of ram. I guess I'll test it out and then see if I need to add more. Thanks.

Starcraft is pretty much mostly dependant on RAM. In our LAN gaming group, we regularly have a P166 classic running starcraft (sometimes as server!), and it has 64mb RAM - runs starcraft smooth as anything. However, when running it on a P133 w/48mb RAM, there was a noticable difference (even moreso than the 33mhz of proc. speed would suggest). Moral of the story - buy lotsa RAM :)

cheers

starcraft only requires a 90 mhz pentium, but it runs fine on a 75mhz one with 64 megs of ram. I run it on a pentium 200 with 64megs and a 800 t'bird with 128 megs and the only difference is loading time. Either is fine with enough ram.

Starcraft runs fine on my p200mmx even on big game hunters with 8 people. If a lot are comps and you max out the # of guys, then it might lag a little but it is never unplayable or painful.

Is a core i5 370M fast enough for 8 players? I think I might hold off on buying a new laptop until low voltage core i7's become more affordable.

maybe you should overclock a celly300a or get a p3 800 for $140. they might be in the compusa or circuit city ads this week for less.

lol I just played some Brood Wars the other day and damn is it fast. Loads up instantly on modern processors. Actually had some lag and was thinking WTF, but then I heard the disc drive spinning up, lol...

Virtualized the disc to the harddrive to take care of that, didn't feel like registering my key and downloading the digital version from Bliz.

Haha I was thinking "WTF someone still has a Pentium 1???"

The funny thing is I was using a Pentium 1 166mhz with 32MB ram to play starcraft in 2002 :D

Imagine playing an 8-player game against yourself using networked VMs. Ha ha!

*cough*

Okay, epic thread necros make us zombies all kind of happy, because this turkey is even more rotten than I, but can we get a lock or something? Fun's ovah!

Wow! I was thinking when I saw the thread title that someone dusted-off some old machines because of a burning desire to play some SC.

Ditch the Cyrix; it will play SC ok, but as others have said, the FPU was horrible on that chip.

Necro FTW!

I was thinking the exact same thing :p, until I noticed people talking about thread necro...
The guy probably found it via a search and didn't notice the date.
mmm... maybe if the date was shown in red and bold if it is more than 1 year old...

haha same. I thought it was just some group that makes old comp into SC lans, taking it a bit too serious. Then CurseTheSky waltz in. Damn we've come a long way in 10 years. 262 mhz to 4 ghz.

Now in 2020 someone needs to come back and necro this thread again. Though I may have just spoiled it.

The Cyrix would likely be faster. Getting it to run stable throughout the entire gaming experience would be more of a challenge, however.
