Well a 2GHz Opteron versus a 2.33GHz Conroe is kind of no match. The higher clocked Conroe will win. Even if they were clocked the same (both at 2.33GHz) the Core architecture has higher IPC than the SledgeHammer architecture.
So two SledgeHammer's versus one dual-core Conroe...unless the Conroe is woefully underclocked or the SledgeHammer's are ridiculously overclocked...its Conroe FTW.
Edit: Also the heat delta has got to be considered. 246's are 130nm devices. E6550 are 65nm devices. The heat output from a couple of 246's has got to dwarf the heat output of an E6550.
What about losing both cpu's, getting a e4400 or so, and overclock it to 3ghz, and never look back? Qaudcore would be even better though, but I suppose that will be to costly ?
