Which is faster 2 SC or 1 DC

The next time I buy a new server, should I buy a server with 1 DC or 2 SC.

(Forget the price of the CPU)

I just want to know which one is faster

There won't really be a difference if they're based on the same architechture and they're clocked at the same speeds with the same specs. Cooling them will be a different matter.

Next time you buy a server, why not get a dual socket motherboard anyway (since with 2 SC's you would need that anyway) and pop in 2 DC processors, for 4 core greatness!

actually all our servers have minimum 2 sockets, however a lot of our server software are priced per core .........

You don't pay extra for HT

Actually, I'd say that there might be a difference, if very slight, depending on the kinds of programs running. A DC chip draws from a shared bank of memory, while 2 SC chips would probably use NUMA, making memory accesses to the other chip's bank more expensive at the gain of making accesses to its own memory bank more quickly.

If you are going AMD then per this site a DC Opteron 866 is faster than 2x Opteron 248s.

Not sure about Intel though.

The difference between 1 DC and 2 DC is very small ....... could it be that the tests don't really test the potential of SMP ?

And if this is the case can you trust the testresults including the test between 2 SC and 1 DC ?
