What will you be doing with the processors? AnandTech has a bunch of benchmarks here: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuch...ts/showdoc.aspx?i=3512

In general, it seems like all of the Phenom II X4s beat the Q8xxx series. They're more on par with the Q9xxx series. The X4 940 seems to go toe-to-toe with the Q9550/Q9650 at a lower price. Maybe the X4 810, which has less L3 cache and is cheaper, would be the closest equivalent to a Q8xxx. But it seems to do better in most benchmarks anyway.

I think the C2Qs are best if you are 1) doing stuff that you know performs better on Intel CPUs than on AMD, or 2) you already have a good LGA 775 motherboard that supports 45nm C2Qs and you are looking to upgrade. If you're building new, the Phenom II is one of the best values available. The only better performance is from the Core i7, but that's obviously a lot more expensive.

yea just found the beta benchmark comparison tool... yea the thing is that i do some file compression/ripping/gaming but need a new cpu. unwilling to go i7 just cause but my curent board only supports 4 gb ram... but it does support up to the QX9650 chips... so basically i'm looking for the lowest price/quality for now. sadly my budget is under 550 usd.

If your running XP then all you need is 4GB of ram...windows won't see or utilize anything more then that.

If your budget is for just a CPU, you have more then enough to get just a new CPU, if you need mobo and cpu you still have enough to purchase both.

I would lean towards the Phenom II...cheaper and rated good! Definitely more bang for your buck...which I think you're looking for...

Kraeoss, if your sig is up to date, your hard drives are small and slow, hampering your system's overall performance. IMO, that should be your primary upgrade area, and then adding more RAM.

well actually i kinda gotta get a new psu and wanna upgrade my gfx card also so:
1. if i get PH II i'll need new board
2. New Card new psu
3. New Cpu can reuse old board for a while
4. New cpu new psu anyways
5. new psu alltogether
6. using vista sp1

so u see my predicament lol need a psu over 550w with atleast 28a on the +12v rail. or else i'll run into problems.
my proposed upgrade of choice was:

1. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819115055 $165.00
2. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814102809 $280.00
3. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817341011 $120.00
this excludes shipping to the caribbean... which may run me up to $100 usd more so total price usd:my currency is

usd $665: TT $4209.45

if there are better parts for cheaper or better configs please advise.

You could get the Antec Earthwatts 650w PSU for $80. More than enough for your system, and you would save some $$ - which you could apply to more RAM. If you have games that benefit from a 4850x2, then chances are they will benefit from additional RAM, as well.

If you are gaming at 1920 res or lower, you could save $100 and get a 1GB 4870 or a GTX260.

I don't see any reason for you to upgrade both the processor and motherboard when you said it can support a Q9650.

I'd say you should look for a Q9300, Q9400, or Q9550.
