I think Segate is still No. 1 for storage but what about a close no. 2
"WD vs Hitachi" for 2TB drives

On new egg Hitachi are $69 vs WD $79, price is kinda of a concern but not really, what I really want is durability and long life. So vs the two which is better.

Since both are pretty good choices, I would say go with the cheaper option of Hitachi. The only drive i still refuse to touch is Seagate because their numerous problems in the past with their 1.5 and 2 tb drives. Not to mention their problematic external 3tb.

hitachi - they are still rocking 512 byte sectors. they use less areal density and more platters which may be more reliable (or not) but imo $59 for a 2TB hitachi is a good deal man.

I don't have any problems with my 7 2TB 7200.11 seagate drives in enclosure for D2D offsite backups. had one go bad when someone thumped the drive while it was copying but that is an obvious no-no.

The Spinpoint 1TB F3 is fast, cheep, and uses just two platters. The F4 2TB drive has 3 platters. Unfortunately, Samsung's storage division was taken over by Seagate, so who knows if their 1TB platters will be developed further. Still, they do have the F6 green drive, 2 platter 2TB drive.

With any drive over 1GB, it is pretty much mandatory that you buy multiple units.
That is just a heck of a lot of data to lose in the event of a failure.

Price don't seem to predict if the HD is good or not, I have seen some very cheap units run longer than a more expensive unit.

For me, the biggest factor seems to be how well the drive is packaged, and what your carrier does with said package.
