Uhhh who cares if it was mainstream. FF was better when it wasn't mainstream.

The Gecko engine that FF uses has been around as long as IE has, and probably longer. MyIE which was the first version of Maxthon didn't have tabbed browsing. MyIE2 implemented it, and then they renamed it to Maxthon.

Mozilla pretty much defined tabbed browsing long before MyIE2 came out, just because FireFox hadn't come out yet doesn't mean they didn't have tabbed browsing. If your really wanted to argue it, you could say they came out around the same time.

The difference is that the gecko engine is 10x the browser IE has ever been or ever will be. FF is only one of many OpenSource browsers based on it.
