Which is better to get?

I currently have a 19" CRT and a 17" CRT at home for my main rig.

My 19" is slowly dying on me (had it since 98) and starting to see which route I should go if I plan on buying new monitors....

Which type of monitors is preferable?

Depends on what you're doing. CRT is still generally better for gaming, though newer LCD's with 14ms pixel response times have pretty much eliminated the issues that LCD's used to have with ghosting.

For text, nothing beats an LCD. I love mine and it's just easier to look at than a CRT.

Personally, I have a hard time considering a CRT anymore, but there are still a lot of people who like them, and there are good reasons. You're best off to go out and compare the screens you're considering and judge for yourself.

about half of us at work (about 40 people in my office) have pretty nice 19" Princeton CRTs...for those that didn't (they were using ratty 15" CRT's), they all got upgraded to 17" Dell LCD's last week...

Since I am good friends with the guy that ordered them, he asked if I wanted to swap out my 19" CRT for the 17" LCD, but I decided to keep the CRT...was that a bad decision?

obviously, I am not doing any gaming at work...i have the CRT set at 1280 x 1024 with 85 hz refresh rate, so I don't get any headaches or anything...

which would be the better monitor?

It's all been said already.

There isn't much in the way of monitor arguments. One's good for gaming, the other is good for office work.
