Hey all,

I just got a HDTV ready TV, and im wondering which is better for conecting the dvd player, a S-video conection or a Component Video? ive heard component is better, but than i heard s-vid is better cuz the component vid bypasses the digital comb filter of the TV.

also, im wondering how many lines of resolution DVD can display?

thanx

<< s-video >>

Ummm.. LOL. Are you kidding?
Component Video is definitely superior to S-Video!

hotrodder, perhaps you're thinking about Composite video, not Component!

S-Video improves upon composite by separating the 'Y' (luminance) and 'C' (chrominance) bands, resulting in a sharper picture with more accurate colors. Component video takes this a step further by separating the 'Y' and two 'C' bands (one for blue and the other for red). Component video addresses some problems that earlier types of connections had such as chroma noise and color bleeding. This the preferred connection for a DVD player, assuming you have the proper inputs on your TV.

I'm using S-Video, and composite must be the single RCA connector (yellow), so what's componant look like?

How about switching gears for a sec: Has S-VHS gone the way of the dodo?

Why would anyone consider getting an S-VHS VCR in this day and age?

For the record, I "upgraded" my 1993 JVC VCR with an S-VHS JVC VCR from Accompany about a year ago (hey, it was $70 total). Turns out that the unit is defective (will just stop playing/recording and shut down without notice). I haven't bothered to get the unit fixed (may still be under warranty). But, if another outrageous deal arises, should I go for S-VHS for the heck of it? Any non-S-VHS decks put out S-Video?

-SUO, should be heading to AVS Forums, hehe

Composite is the RCA yellow plug, S-Video is a 4-pin round plug, and component is three RCA plugs

Look here guys! : Connectors

It's pretty self-explanatory:

[*]The black connectors where it says "S-Video out" is for S-Video
[*]The three green, blue and red connectors where it says "Component Video out" is for Component Video
[*]The yellow where it says "Video 1" is for Composite video.

The picture quality (worst->best): Composite -> S-video -> Component Video

Component video does have 3 separate RCA jacks, but they are not labeled R/G/B, even though the jacks are those colors. They are labeled Y/B-Y/R-Y instead. This is a higher quality connection then S-Video, in theory.

The highest quality connection can be found on high-end computer displays and projectors. It uses 5 BNC jacks separating the R/G/B and both sync signals.

Component is better. Way better colors! And sharper images. I'm using the component cables they use in the tv stations to broadcast signals....good stuff =)
Try it yourself, compare the 2. Go out and get a s-video cable then go try some component cables. Believe me, you can tell the difference between a pair of cheap $20 component cables vs $80 ones :).

hey all,

is it true that the component vid connection will bypass the TV's digital comb filter? if so, isnt that a bad thing?

Component is superior to s video, but that has been established. The next step up from component would be vga or progressive scan, yes? I have a nice component, 1 svideo, 3 composite and 1 coaxil TV (to bad it is only 27").

Using either s-video or component will bypass the filter the tv uses and no that is not a bad thing.

Also, if you hook up your dvd player through component and also use the s-video and composite you better check that the colors aren't way out of wack once you set up the component input from the dvd player. On my tv, Zenith Inteq, the component is WAY off from the s-video and composite so I don't use it, otherwise when watching regular tv the colors are really bad. If your tv has separate settings for each input then it doesn't matter, but very few have this.

Hee hee, for once all that time I've spent on the Playstation 2 boards will pay off. This topic frequently arises on the PS2 boards due to the different connections you can get for the PS2.

As everyone has already pointed out, component video theoretically does offer a sharper picture than S-video, although the difference between S-video and component is rather small, especially in comparison to the jump between composite and S-video (which is astounding).

Just wanted to add one more point. If you're interested in playing any console games using your tv, some people actually feel that the S-video actually is preferable to component video. The primary reason is that the sharper the picture, the more evident the "jaggies" that are so infamous in video games. I've also come across people who prefer the picture of S-video over composite for viewing DVDs as well, although it probably all depends on your actual tv and set-up. Ideally, you would want to get both cables and compare to see which one looks better to you for your particular setup.

I have both of my PS2s' hooked up with component and I would scream bloody hell if someone changed them back to s video. I like my dreamcasts' and dvd on s video, but my PS2s' get the component signal. The sharper, the better. Jaggies dont bother me, I just take my glasses off and sit further away :).
