Which is better Quantum or Maxtor

40 gig Quantum fireball as hard drives 7200 rpm ata100
or 40gig Maxtor Harddrive 7200rpm ata-100?

You're going to get a Maxtor either way, because Quantum was acquired by them. Right now, I think you should get the Maxtor DiamondMax D740X, this is a product under the Maxtor/Quantum merged company, it was derived from the Quantum hard drive line, and it's very fast.

I use both of them regularily. There is no question the Maxtor is better.
The Quantum is making "funny" things now and then. It's not my first Quantum either...

I'm buying it used, thats why i really don't have a choice.

the quantum still have 2yrs of warranty left....maybe if i RMa'em i'll get a Maxtor back;)

If I'm not mistaken the two companies work in conjunction with each other now. I feel that Maxtor offers more options in terms of performance, noise, and size. Their drives are also some of the most reliable ever created, the most important aspect that a hard drive should posses.

Quantum invented the ATA 33/66/100 spec...and i suspect they are also the ones responsible for the ATA 133... and Maxtor is benefiting from it...:) I would get the Maxtor though as the last Fireball AS is getting kinda old... although i've never had a problem with mine. :D
