I am looking to get either one of the 80gb versions of these drives, in my area i can pretty much get both drives at the same prices. So my question is which one is better in terms of performance, acoustics and reliability? For me performance is the most important factor in my decision, a relatively quiet drive would also be a big plus. So which one would you recommend?

October 1st Maxtor Warranty drops to 1 year.

Seagate still offers 3 years.

Where would you put your money?

I've owned both drives.

The segate is definitely quiter....with AAM enabled (default), you can barely hear it doing seeks while hold the drive near your ear.

The D740X is faster, but noticeably noiseier....about the same as the WD and IBM drives.

If you need performance, get the WD SE drive. Look in the Hot-deals forums for some great prices on these babies.

Hope this helps,
