I currently have a Geforce2 GTS Pro run at stock speed of 201 core / 400 memory.
Now my friend has a mx420 geforce4 off his newly purchased dell 8250.

I was wondering which is the better card? Any suggestions or explanations would be greatly appreciated.

Bench your system.

Go to your friend's house... steal his card... put in your system... bench.

Compare.

Return card that is slower.

lol

I know the 440 is a relatively nice card.. but I don't know about the 420... my guess would be that the 420 is faster though.

I would probably give the nod to the GF4MX just b/c it prolly has more advanced directx capapbilities which takes advantage of today's games.

The MX420 has abosolutely horrible performance. It uses 128-bit SDRAM. Expect speed between a MX400 and a GTS, closer to the MX. A MX440 is far better as it has 128-bit DDR, a bit faster than a GF2 Pro, close to Ultra speeds

The DDR version of MX420 is even worse. It is only 64-bit. With the DDR overhead, 128-bit SDR will be slightly faster than 64-bit DDR.

The GF4 MX420 is roughly comparable in overall performance to the GF2 GTS-V.... quite impressive given SDR based 'GeForce' products arent ewxactly known for their performance.

If you've got your GTS running at 200/400 then thats full GF2 Pro clockspeeds which is definitely a fair bit faster then the MX420.

Given that the GF4 MX is based on the GF2 core the differences between the products are minimal. The 4MX has a vastly superior DVD playback implementation. Outside of that it has a considerably more efficient if slightly lower quality FSAA implementation then the GF2.

Few other real differences to speak of.
If 3D gaming performance is the sole factor then the GF2 at Pro clockspeeds will certainly be faster in most situations.
