Which is better for optical mouse, USB or PS2?

I had mine plugged into PS/2 port, but it started going all weird after a while, and I plugged it into the USB and it works fine. Plus it's a four button mouse, and in the USB the extra buttons work, in PS/2 they weren't useful. I would go for USB.

I think this thread was also posted in General Hardware - a no-no! However - it really depends on what you want to do and what your system is capable of. I find no difference at all between PS/2 and USB with the same mouse as far as performance goes. However, none of my machines will run a USB mouse in a DOS boot mode. Therefore - PS/2 rules for me.

USB all the way... I switched to USB after I got my new motherboard installed because it has more usb ports (6 total), and I noticed a dramatic increase in the "smoothness" of the mouse cursor.

I also tend to think that USB makes it a bit smoother than PS2 ... if you're switching from a clumsy trackball to an optical, why wouldn't you want to use the faster USB? :)

Just to be different, I have a Logitech optical mouse using PS/2 and have never had a problem and all my buttons work.

I agree, USB. I'm using my grandparent's optical mouse right now on PS/2 and it's response and refresh just aren't as good as when I use the exact same mouse on my computer with USB.

In fact, I use a linksys KVM between an M$ and a Linux box, but don't use the mouse port because then I'd be forced to use PS/2. I previously thought the lag was because of the KVM, but discovered it was the PS/2.

I'd have to go with USB mouse... PS2 isn't P-n-P like most (if not all) usb devices... came in handy when my new logitech mouse crapped out on me and I had to swap with an older MS optical mouse...

Have you guys tried jacking up the sampling rate when you used it on the PS2 port?

The sampling rate of USB is hardwired to 125 reports per second. However, the PS2 port sampling rate can be increased to 200 reports per second. Personally, between running on a USB at 125 and the PS2 at 200, I really can't tell a difference...
