Which is better for oc'ing? throughbred or intel?

I heard amd will use the same xp motherboard for new throughbred and the first one to come out is 1800+
I don't remember exactly, but someone said it will overclock to 2500+ very easily with simple L1 connecting with pencil like old TB and said FSB will go as high as 170 mhz...

So, which one is better, intel 1.6A or AMD Throughbred 1800+?

Should I wait for 1800+?

Probably the P4 because from what we're hearing the Tbred's core will still be quite small and it's damn hard to cool it. So, at the very least, it should be easier to OC P4s. As for which OCs better (percentage gain), we don't know yet.

If you need new power now, go with the 1.6A. If you can wait 2-3 months, that's cool, too. But there's always something better just around the corner.

Once I find a time machine and go into the future to grab a release TBred I'll let you know... until then it's all guesses and estimations.

I have seen many people predict the heat build-up on the smaller core of the T-bred will be greater. It seems AMD went to the effort to make the XP run cooler than the original Thunderbird, I would hope the same thing applies for the .13 micron T-bred. Even if it doesn't, I can't see it making any more heat than a 1500MHz+ 2.0v Thunderbird putting out 110+watts. We all learned how to overclock the snot out of those and still keep them cool, even with air-cooling and we will have all the hardware sitting here ready to go!

well, seeing as how AMD over-estimated the power drop between XP and T-birds (they claimed 20%, everybody believes teh 20%, but if you look at the PDFs, its between 11-15%), its hard to tell how much T-bred will drop over XP chips. As it stands, its looking like 1.65V will be the vcore on the .13 mu Tbreds, which doesn't drastically reduce heat.

However, the voltage is not yet solid, there are rumors of 1.6V. However, the DIE size is known. ~80 sq mm. IN order for a tbred to match an XP chip in terms of Heat/Sq mm it would need to run roughly 38% cooler clock for clock. Which just isn't going to happen.

P.S. A T-bird @110W = .91 W/Sq mm. A tbred @ 70W = .875. HOwever, that is a T-bred at stock voltage/clock(1867). Now, let's estimate what a 2ghz Tbred @ 1.8V would put out: ~84W or so. Which would put heat/sq mm = 1.05. Far higher than the T-bird you have posted for example. now, if you push to 2.5ghz @ 1.8V, you may be looking at 100W of heat, with only 80 sq mm of contact.

P.S.2. The predictions are made with known data provided by several reliable websites, and a zdnet germany page that has stated both vcore and heat output numbers.

According to the pictures that Anand got, it looks like they have the heat spreaders ala Intel. That would give more surface area for contact.

edit: My bad, that's clawhammer, not thoroughbred. Still, they may use something like this to accomplish the same feat.

All thoroughbred topics are speculations until someone starts reviewing them....I hope they run cooler cause I like my nice quiet system now...I haven't heard a harddrive work in about a year.:)

Mikewarrior2, that is some good info and it sounds correct. However, maybe it is just wishful thinking, but we must be missing some critical piece if information. If everything you stated is true, then it seems AMD could not possibly release a T-bred any faster than 1866MHz because it simply would not stay cool enough in any OEM system. It would take four case fans and several blow holes, a big copper lapped cpu cooler and artic silver to keep it cool. Any attempt to release a 2GHz or higher just could not be cooled in a normal setup, it would be impossible. So there must be a part of the equation that we haven't seen yet, think about it, AMD or Intel for that matter would never release a cpu with that kind of heat problem.

Ditto...someone has to have the chip to see first. You can't go by heresay. Anyway that would be a sweet oc on the tbred if it's really possible when they come out. I may have to get one if they really do that.
