Which is better for gaming and networking? XP PRO or WINDOWS 2000?

I am building a new computer system and I would like to know which OS I should get. I was leaning towards 2000, but then I was told that XP is better for gaming. Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!

Being the newer OS, XP is going to be better tested with the newer hardware you're likely to want in a gaming rig. Performance-wise, they'll be close to identical - especially on a machine that's new enough to bother playing games on. For all networking purposes, they're the same.

I'd get XP.

edit: and welcome to the forums...

If you don't want to have to deal with resetting permissions on network shares, then simple file sharing in XP can be a blessing, just be careful though because it is much less secure.

I would personally go with Windows 2000 because then you don't have as much restrictions to what you can do with your cd. Also Windows 2000 is a very mature OS. Also remember that both are built around the NT core which is what makes them better than windows 9x.

In my opinion XP was design considering people that need things easier to set up and with more eye candy that is not necessary. :) :)

I hope this helps,

heh, really cant go wrong with either imho. but one thing to consider is, if you have a p4 cpu with hyper threading technology, windows 2000 doesnt support it. so if you have a p4 cpu with hyper threading, you want windows xp hands down. hyper threading owns.

I would go with the Windows 2000 because it is likely that you will be changing your hardware frequently, which would cause you to have to reactivate XP.

now that i think of it, if win2k supported hyper threading, id be running that right now. ive always liked the simplicity of win2k over winxp, as in the layout and non-eyecandy crap. plus its simple to manage.

Practically speaking, both OSes are about the same. They are both built on the NT kernal and are both very stable. Windows XP is newer and will be supported (hardware and drivers) more than 2000, but I seriously doubt 2000 driver support is going to slack too soon. If you are going to be playing older games, I would go with XP, as in my experience, XP handles them better than 2000. If mostly you will play newer games, either will be fine. To address a few comments: Activation is a non issue if you asked me. You can install the OS 3 times in 3 months before having to pick up your phone and spend 5 minutes with a MS rep. You could also install Windows once, create a Drive Image/Ghost backup and restore it when you have trouble. And as for "eye candy". If you don't want/like it. Turn it off. A couple mouse clicks will fix that and you will essentially be using a newer version of Windows 2000.
