Which is better for a (slow) laptop, Win98SE, or WinME?

I finally got my CDROM working in DOS on this P100 laptop, so am free to install the OS of my choice. I'm thinking that I would like to use WinME, simply because I like the Win2k feel of it. Does it offer any other enhancements/shortcomings compared with Win98SE?

I'm also contemplating RedHat, but not very much...

win9x should be fine, me wouldn't be a good idea, neither would nt4.. i've tried nt4 on a p90, that was not pleasant at all.

Redhat 7 will also run slow. I'm running it on a 166mmx and 32megs of ram, it's pure hell. Win95 would be the best for speed.

Personally I woudln't use WinME becuase of System Restore and WMP7...

I'd probably even skip Win98SE...I'd go for Win95OSR2...

But of 98SE and ME, 98SE definately.

As for Redhat...well Linux itself requires almost nothing to run...but in order to run XFree ("XWindows&quot😉 takes quite a chunk of CPU and RAM....XFree is almost up there with WinNT in system resource usage. I didn't enjoy running it on my 200mmx with 32MB RAM...

My K6-2/350 with 64MB was good enough, so probably about the same as NT4 (though behind 2000)

98lite. Strip out all the junk, and then set the background to the neat blue (R:58 G:110 B:164)and change the icons to the 2k/Me ones. You'll have a quick system (as fast as 95, but with the slightly updated services of 98). Or you could just use 98lite to install WinMe and strip out all the junk from that.

As for Linux the slowest machine I ever ran it on was a 225Mhz IDT C6, but it was plenty useable (even w/ KDE). Linux on a laptop can be hard though, so unless you need Linux for something specific or you really want a non-MS OS then I'd say stick with Windows.

I recommend 95 osr2+ as it is the most bug-free 95 release and doesn't have all the extra junk that 98 has. 98lite might be another good choice but I don't have any experience with it...

I have a p90 laptop with 16 megs of ram.I use win95 osr2 with fat 32.It works fine .The newer os's will run,you will need 64 to 128 megs of ram, unless you have a lot of free time on your hands.

Win 95b hands down. The other Win9x are too bloated.
The 98Lite option is a great idea too.

Bozo 😀

I installed Win98SE on one our laptops P75 with 24MB RAM and now it runs slower than when I had Win95 OSR B. My vote goes for the Win95 OSR B.
