Which is better Athlon XP 2800+ or Sempron 2800+

Which is better Athlon XP 2800+ or Semrpon 2800+.

I just bought Sempron 2500+ and socket A motherboard and have not installed. But today Fry's has the AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with a better motherboard for only $30 more.

Just wondered which CPU is better, the Athlon XP 2800+ or Sempron 2800+ (I thought I'd compare the same numbers, even though I bought the 2500+). And why is one better?

Thanks so much,

Jeff

If the AthlonXP 2800+ is not a Barton, I believe it is identical to the Sempron 2800+. The standard, non-Barton AthlonXP line was relabeled and repositioned in the product line to replace the Duron. Given that there may be a chance for the older chip to be unlocked (newer AMDs come completely locked now), I'd go for that.

Also, I believe the original 2800+ was 266mhz only, where as the Sempron is 333mhz.

Nick what does you comment mean? You like the sempron over the Athlon xp?

And I slightly edited original message.

Thanks again for your thoughts, just wonders if I should exchange Sempron 2500+ and ECS motherboard for slightly better motherboard and Athlon xp 2800+ for $30 more.

Jeff

I have overcloced before, but not so sure this motherboard (I think ECS n2u400) is very overclockable.

I currently have 600 duron that works at 850 or 900.

Overclocking is not that big of issue for me....Just looking for whether 2800+ was better in Sempron or Athlon XP. (comparing like speeded CPUs)

As I mentioed earlier, I bought motherboard combo with Sempron 2500+. and for $30 more I can get slightly better motherboard, and now XP2800+.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Jeff

The 2800+ should be a barton. I don't believe amd ever made a TBred 2800+. I know they did 2700+ but I don't think they did a 2800+ TBred.

is this the combo for $99? i'd personally go with this one since the bunbled mobo is an NF2(an AN35N most likely), and i'm assuming that 2500+ sempron came with an ECS board.

the athlon xp (pick speed)+ is faster than the sempron (pick speed)+ if the rated speeds are the same. this is because the athlon xp compares with the pentium 4, where the sempron compares with the celeron, which is much slower per clock cyce. the sempron is rated about 300 points over the exact same core / clock athlon xp iirc.

The XPs with NF2 boards at Frys have been ECS boards. The ad is still good till today, so then it definitely is ECS.

Not really. They work great. Not a whole bunch of features like firewire, USB brackets, etc, but it does what its supposed to do. Not many boards can match its price point too, which is like.. $.00!

I own an AXP 2800+, the ones out now are all Bartons, you must be thinking of an older model. AMD is still producing 3 Athlon XP Barton models, the 2800+, the 3000+, and the 3200+. And they just did a neat little comparison of the 2 in PCworld this month. On the PCworld benchmark, the 2800+ Barton scores an 84, and the Sempron scores a 78. The 4 point difference is somewhat significant, considering the highest score on that test ever was like a 130. Go with the 2800+ Barton if you find it.

yes you are right, i meant it sucks that it wasnt the shuttle board that was bundled like i saw a couple of months ago. then again i could be wrong .

This $99 bundle has the ECS n2u400, which some of the more expensive CPUs have had. The cheaper Semproon 2500+ bundle had the ECS k7vta3 motherboard.

I traded in my old unused bundle, but the "new" motherboard was a return also. That's all they had of the n2u400's, 20 or so returned ones. Oh well, hopefully it will work fine.

The XP is a tried and true cpu. The sempron is still new, but appears promising. I would go with the XP just because it has 512 L2 cache over the 256 of the sempron. other than that, the performance should be about the same.
