Which is better? An old amd or an old intel cpu for server?

Both were on bad boards. I want to build a server and re-use one of the cpu's. The server will be upgraded later but for right now a new board and some ram is all I need if I re-use the cpu.

Out of these two cpu's which would be better?

Intel celeron 2.0 128/400/1.525v or Athlon 64 2.4ghz Venice Socket 754. ADA3400AIK4B0 (model s 512kB L2)

Well that answers that question doesn't it. Now onto motherboards.... thanks for the quick response.

Is this a serious question? The A64 2.4Ghz is going to slap the Celeron around like a <Insert clever analogy>. Neither have much upgrade ability though, so be prepared to replace the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and possibly the video card(Mobo has an IGP?) as well in that future upgrade.

That Venice chip was the fastest version of the newest core using the smallest process for socket 754. I had one running around 2.8GHz without much problem.

That Celeron is a Northwood with a crippling 128k cache. They were a shoe-in for running 2.66GHz at stock voltage, or up to 3GHz with a voltage boost, but they were still relatively low performance. Northwood chips were Pentium 4 "Netburst" class, which benefitted from a bit more cache.

Why is fast an issue; what kind of server is this? I'd go for whichever one you could complete the system with, without buying anything and secondary consideration would be which runs cooler and consumes less energy and depending on where it will be, which can be made quieter.

this was back in the days when AMD pwned intel.

so yes, the AMD venice core = uber compared to that crappy northwood..
