Which is better? A V3 1000 or TNT2 Ultra?

My friend is getting a second hand TNT2 Ultra from someone he knows and currently is using a Voodoo 3 1000 (compaq OEM card... basically a castrated V3). He mostly plays Quake III and some Unreal Tournament. I'd imagine UT would prefer the V3 1000 since it offers glide support. But would the TNT2 Ultra be better for Q3A? I'm not sure since I'm not familiar with nVidia products. I loaned my friend a V5 5500 for about 3 months since I felt sorry for him. He's a true gamer but has crappy hardware. (he should get a job) Thanks!

The tnt2 ultra is about 2 times as fast as the v3 1000(it's a bit faster than a voodoo3 3500)

I'd say the TNT2U and V3 3500 are about the same in terms of performance though I prefer the V3 because of much better 2D and more solid drivers. Also the V3's seem to run modern games better then do the TNT2 series generally.

Having said that the V3 1000 is a bit of a castrated V3, and the TNT2U is the fastest of the TNT2 lineup, he will definitely get better performance overall out of the TNT2U.

the voodoo3 1000 is a voodoo3(not 2) clocked at 125MHz only available in oem format. It has no cooling on it also.

Don't forget the Ultra is a 32bit card, while the V3 is only 16bit, which means that the Ultra will actually run more modern games than the V3. Try playing Myst III or Links 2001 on a V3. You can't, and more will be following this "32bit only" trend.

Those V3 1000's could be had for around $50 a year ago, and even today as used, they can bring close to that, (for someone that needs a good card in an old system).
