Which is better: 6800 Ultra or the 8600GTS?

I haven't had any personal experience with the 8600GTS, but I did play around with the 6800 ultra at a gaming cafe. I can't find any competing benchmarks though.

Does anyone know??

TomsHardware VGA charts

Use the chart and compare for yourself.

THANK YOU!

Battlefield 2 uses a less GPU intensive engine than 2142, right?

So the FPS shouldn't be a tad bit higher......??

This is excellent news! The 6800 ultra ran great for BF2 when I used it, so I'm going to be 99% the 8600GTS should as well.

The 8600GTS is a good card. Make sure you get the latest drivers, though. They have gotten a fairly decent performance bump since some of the earlier reviews. Some people are under the impression that it isn't that great, but keep in mind that not much is in comparison to a $550 8800GTX. I'd advise the MSI OC 8600GTS for $164 from Newegg. It is factory clocked at 710/2100, and is in the same neighborhood speedwise as the 7900GS with the great image quality that the 8800 series has. Not much can touch the Geforce 8 series in image quality - I'd venture to say that it is perhaps a bit better than ATI's 1900 series (which last generation was hands down the image quality king).

I need reassurance since I'm stuck with the 8600GTS (only mid-level card Dell offers.)

It would cost too much money to replace it with something better. The x1950pro is only a tad bit more powerful so paying for the 7300LE and x1950pro doesn't seem that logical.

I was just a little scared i guess.

The Radeon X1950 GT might save yah $30-$40 over the 8600gts.

And if you can hold out for a few months nVidia normally *tweaks* in the fall. There's no doubt you are in the most competitve price/performance range. :)

You are not stuck if that is all they offer - well, except with dx10 :)

I think what he meant was, if he was to plan on getting a X1950, he would still have to order the cheapest card possible from Dell, only to replace it. So he is buying two cards and one sits on the shelf. Good for a spare though. But not very practical.

And it's costing me more.

Buying the DEll 7300LE and replacing it with an x1950pro, would cost $100 more (with newegg shipping) than buying the dell with an 8600GT.

Keep in mind that x1950pro averages 5-10 FPS more than 8600GTS in battlefield.

Not very practical indeed. I wish Dell optioned the 8800GTS. That would be awesome.

I guess I can always upgrade later, right? I'm sure the 8800GTS will bottle down to $150 or so in the next couple of years...hopefully.
