Which is best?

Im looking at 2 laptops which are similar price, one is AMD 64 3400 with 512mb RAM, and the other a Pentium M 1.73ghz 1GB RAM, Which will run best for Office, Web and DVDs?

Either will do the job. The AMD is a more powerful but power-hungry machine. Look at the battery life, if it's important to you. Also, if you ever plan to move to a 64-bit OS, the AMD machine is the only choice.

Exactly, the 3400+ sounds like a desktop replacement laptop, therefore battery life isnt an issue. Turion/Pentium M is the way to go for portability.

This is a stupid question cause this has more to do with ram, ram speed, and harddrive speed....

I can tell you with a pentium M (Dell) sitting next to a 3000+ that has been over the last 2 days been clocked and tested at 3500+, 3800+, and 4200+ speeds it doesn't compare much even at 3500+...However th e3400+ on a laptop platform may have been neutered with ram speed, single channel ram (I think it is an sckt 754)), and 4200-7200rpm harddrives....


I have done extensive testing with my Intel P-M 1.86ghz and I am just not impressed....

I'd take the Pentium M myself, since if i was buying a laptop, it'd be for portability.

The true mobile AMDs are Turions.

Anything else uses the thicker bulky cases, which aren't so light.

Get a Turion, In general normal usage, the battery has a longer life, it also cheaper, and the performance is equal if not better than a similarly clocked PM.
For good word opening try to get one with a 5400 harddisk, HP-Compaq have very good deals in laptops.
