Which is best, glossy or anti-glare screen?

I would appreciate your advice on whether I should go with a glossy or anti-glare screen for my laptop.

I am thinking about getting a laptop for home. It would usually be docked with a desktop monitor, but would occasionally be used on its own. When used on its own, it would be used for writing and for non-professional photo editing. I would not be watching video.

I am puzzled that nearly all laptops for home use have glossy screens while all LCD monitors and TV sets have anti-glare coatings instead. I think that I would prefer anti-glare, yet that would eliminate most laptops.

Which is best, glossy or anti-glare?

I don't mind the glossy screen on my laptop (see sig) but not all glossy screens are the same, so I would suggest figuring out what machine you want, then try to get to a store that sells it and take a look at it for yourself.

I think something like a "superview" screen as Lenovo calls it is what you may want to look at. I have one of their X61 tablets with a SXGA+ superview screen and it's quite nice, not glossy and good viewing angles. It's also supposed to be good outdoors but I haven't tried that yet, perhaps tomorrow.

It depends on your situation. Glossy will be more visible outdoors, but a normal screen (not really anti-glare, just not glossy) will reflect much less light indoors (the typical office environment has lots of overhead lighting, contributing to glare). I personally like normal screens, but glossy can also be good depending on what you're using it for.

i know people rave about the dell true-life glossy screens, but after using one for a couple months i can honestly say its still a laptop screen. nowhere near the image quality of my samsung 225bw 22" widescreen (which isnt glossy). the dell looks great, but my samsung looks like a crt. much richer, much thicker color on the samsung, and the samsungs simply schools this dell in text. if they ever figure out how to get black levels on lcd's down to a point where it isnt laughable things would be a lot better too.
