Have one last item to purchase for my new 'puter - the least expensive thing, a NEW Floppy Drive. Which do you think is the BESt at same price; Teac or Sony?

Um....are you really that worried about a floppy? If so, I'd also choose the TEAC.

Floppy is a floppy, and while I can't vouch for Teac I can say that Sony's are pretty quiet.

I'd get a 10,000 rpm floppy for best performance... its really hard to fill up that 1.44mb ;)

For as much as most people use the floppy drive, I'd ask around to see if anyone has an old computer in the basement you could scrounge the floppy drive out of. Blow it out, clean off the face plate and install it. If you like, you could always stencil SONY or TEAC on it. If you really want to blow people away, stencil PLEXTOR 1.44 RW on it.

Sony is the better overclocker. ;)

My Sony floppy is more quiet than my teac. Of course this could just be a bad Teac.

Well, since it doesn't matter at all about the drive itself, I'd be tempted to give the Sony a try - the screws that came with my Teac broke off in the holes, without even being tightened very tight... ^_^

sony are much nicer quiet and smoother operation, teac = noisy, cranky, clumsy whatever you want to call it but i had bad experience with it. avoid mitsumi as well, generic crap.

TEAC floppy drives are overrated and seem to fail electronically at an unusually high rate. I'd prefer Sony, Misumi, or Samsung, but brand doesn't matter much.

No. But they perform better in RAID. :)

Would that be software RAID or true hardware RAID?

NO, NO, NO, TEAC IS THE BEST! Don't you understand! It's incredibly important! Why won't people listen to me!

I try to tell them. I grab someone's arm on the street -- "Teac makes the only floppy driver worth considering!" I tell them, "You'd be a fool to stake your life on any floppy drive other than a Teac!" Yet they twist away from me, their eyes rolling with incredulity. They curse at me. Some even threaten me. Why can't they realize, I'm trying to tell them THE TRUTH.

Mother understands, though. This thought is wonderfully consolling.

I like Mitsumis because they're cheap. You really can't go wrong with these brands, as long as you're not buying some no-name floppies.

Lets not have this break out into the usual Sony Vs Teac flamewar! All the Sony and Teac zealots stay out and lets have an intelligent discussion of each drives merits for a change.

LOL. Cyberized, I suspect this isn't exactly what you were expecting for responses. :)

I'd probably get the Sony. I have a Teac, but it does sound a bit clunky. I also bought a Mitsumi that was DOA.

And make sure the ribbon cable is plugged in right. On my Teac I had to break a tab from the back of the PCB to make the cable orientation correct.

I will never buy anything from Sony. Many ignorant people believe Sony = quality. Sony sells overpriced crap and has terrible customer support. Their products are very poor feature wise for the price and Sony products rate poorly in Consumer Reports for reliability. If your Sony monitor breaks you have to send it in so they can "repair" it. Yet most people complain the monitor comes back worse. They have to try to attempt to fix it numerous times before they'll replace it.
