you left of Benq (the 1640 was great) and Plextor. The Phillips chipset in these drives is what makes them good.

Most manufacturers just rename drives so unless you know what the drive is based on you really can't compare general manufacturers.

If you're going to repost this, at least make the poll to go with it.

Plextor, BenQ, Pioneer and NEC have all had drives which could be qualified as "best" in many areas.

Plextor because, well, it's the best.
BenQ because it's like Plextor but cheaper.
Pioneer because (at least in the last generation) they were the cheapest and had the best ripping speed and even the best quality on a lot of media.
NEC because they're usually the cheapest and are at least close to the best write quality.

But this thread is stupid anyway.

Queer list. Toshiba-Samsung and Hitachi-LG are conspiciously absent as they are primary designer/manufacturers, the latter having the highest market share of all. And they are good. Indeed, my vote for the best drive available at the mo' would go to a GSA-H10N variant manufactured by Hitachi in Nippon (for the slight edge over same from S. Korea or China). Also, not all variants sport the special case. I believe I-O Data and Buffalo rebrand such Nipponese units (note Buffalo black model pictured has ordinary case). Anyhoo, these Super-Multi's have 12x DVD-RAM, 10x +R DL and 8x +RW. Previous models have been relatively quiet and produced quality writes.

i would have to say Plextor and then NEC. I find plextor way too overpriced though.

Actually, this thread is pointless when the OP is too dumb to do any reading.

Search function? Check out cdrlabs.com? Something. Anything.
