Which IPOD to buy?

Sometime this week I plan to go to the apple store in NYC to purchase an Ipod and maybe attend one of their workshops.

This will be my first MP3 player so not sure on which to purchase.

I will most likely use it for exercise (running) and also in my car. Im not really sure I'd have a use for the video player since the screen is so small.

What do you recommend?

For the people who have the Ipod Video what do you watch on it?

30 gig video

I never thought I'd use the video, but I do ALL the time. It's extremely awesome to have, plus 30 gigs is perfect.

DO IT

***ALSO apple rules and osx is way better than windows you MS fanboys can shove it***

If you're running I seriously suggest a Nano...

iPod mini's are nice as well but the 4GB microdrives in them don't usually stand up to much punishment (trust me, I've worked on enough of them to know, and that's why I have a pile of 6 dead ones sitting on my desk)

depends what you are doing with it. I'd think that for excercise related activites than the nano is the way to go. If this is for riding the subway/bus/airplane or sitting @ your desk @ work or something than a 30gig video is the way to go.

well, the problem with the video one, is that it uses a hard drive. this is bad for running. if you're going to run with it, i suggest the nano as it is flash based. true the video has an ample 30GB of storage, but the hdd might die if you exercise with it. i suggest the 4GB nano. just make sure to put it in a tough case.

For exercise, a flash player is probably best. I would certainly NOT take a large video player running. I was very close to buying a nano - I had one in my hand but put it back last second.

I did more research and decided to buy the Sansa e250. Here is why it is better than the nano:
-twice the battery life
-twice the capacity for $80 less
-great sound quality
-has an FM tuner
-much bigger screen
-plays video
-you don't have to buy overpriced itunes
-you can use subscription music (which I thought wasn't that great until I did the free trial - it's awesome!)
-has microphone recording
-user-replaceable battery
-expandable memory - can add another gb or two using a microSD card
-I don't think there's anything the ipod can do but this can't

If you're in high school, want to look cool to your friends, and want to overpay for an mp3 player, then ipods are perfect. Otherwise, I'd at least take a look at the Sandisk Sansa e200 series or the Samsung z5.

My friend has a nano I played around with and I am VERY happy I didn't buy one of those and got the e260.

ipod 30gb video is the way to go.
I would also suggest getting one from Costco because of their unlimited return policy. If it breaks tomorrow or 10 years from now, just return it.

Well as I stated in my post I mostly plan to use it for running on the treadmill.

Most likely I will go with the 1GB Nano but I heard that the battery dies out fast when the Ipod is used very rugged since I will be bouncing on the treadmill.

at least we can run games, overclock our computer, and enjoy more software! *sticks tongue out* though i like apple a lot too.

yes i agree. my 5G 30GB ipod has been perfect. ive used up half of it and i have all the music i need as well as a couple of movies and clips.

if you get the nano, be warned that you are only paying for size.

shufflewise...yeah. i dont really know what to say for them, heh.

If you're running on a treadmill why not set your music player *on* the treadmill so it is somewhat stationary?

Yeah, if you're always on a treadmill then I'd go for a hard drive since they're better deals. Don't put it on the treadmill though - that can sometimes be more shaky than an armband. Put it on a table or something nearby that isn't moving. However, I still recommend looking at non-Apple products if you want to pay for an mp3 player instead of paying for Apple's marketing.

I take my ipod video with me when I go on my road bike and it hasn't had any problems, so I guess some of the hard drive ipods are alright.

However if you're running or doing something that has constant hard jitters then definitely use something other than an ipod, otherwise just get one.

I edited my statement from saying PC's to Windows (PCS are better, but windows blows and OSX rules)

That's a sweet looking MP3 player. If I ever decide to get one I'm looking at this one

I don't like music subscription services unless I'm getting the full quality song (CD quality at least) and there is a discount, otherwise there is no point..

sansa looks sweet till you look at online reviews of how buggy it is. seriously, hearing system noise? ick. thats just unacceptable from a music player. and the hoops you have to go through to play video? you gotta convert it to some silly old fashioned quicktime format with screwed up sonud taking up huge amounts of space while looking like cr@p. it has extra features yes, but its generally cr@p at them, and bigger to boot. strangely enough they chose to make it bigger than the nano without putting in user accessable battery. if you are going to make it bigger, put in a battery compartment door or something yeesh. the controls also seem to be rather less than perfect. meh go to cnet and look at some of the lower reviews.

get a nano or ipod, depends on size of your music collection and how much you want to take with you at a time. itunes is pretty good with shuffle auto fill or smart playlists so nano isn't so bad.

I like the first two.. BTW, people say that you should buy music to support the artist, but what if they're dead? (Never thought about this until my friend told me)

UPDATE!!!!!!

I decided to buy the 2GB Ipod Nano and also the Nike Sport Armband seen here:

Are you sure you didn't mishear that?
Are you sure it wasn't phrased like, "used rigorously"? or something similar?

I don't think the battery drains any faster if the player is bouncing around.
The batter does die faster if you play around with the player a lot(i.e. changing songs, changing volume, messing with games, etc)
