Which Intel 45nm Quad should I be hunting for and what stepping? Final upgrade for my 775-DDR2 system.

All right ladies and boys, just found out my mobo can take one of those newer 45nm quads and it can overclock the hell out of it.

I'm already doing 450 FSB w/ my E8400, which I understand is extremely lucky with my mobo in the first place. Theoretically, I should be able to hit 3.6GHZ with a 8x multiplier quad. I know the Q6600 is out of the question and all 65nm for that matter.

The mobo apparently powers 45nm quads suitably regardless of ASUS not listing it, so I need a recommendation on what I should be "hunting for" in my current situation.

I have a similar mobo as you (Asus P5N-D, 750i SLI) and I, too, have an E8400 overclocked to 3.825GHz. My last socket 775 upgrade will be the Q9550. I've seen people get over 4GHz with the Q9550 and its 4-cores will be an advantage as more games and programs take advantage of more than 2-cores.

My Asus P5N-D (nVidia 750i SLI) is capable of running any of the Quad Core CPUs from Intel. My last upgrade (I'm currently also using an E8400) will be the Q9550. I've seen people get to 4GHz with this CPU quite regularily. The Q9550 is at the right price point and will be more future-proof as games and other programs take advantage of 4 cores.

Edit: I'm sorry for the double post. I'm using Firefox and it didn't show me my 1st post.

Q9550

But wait about a month, the Phenom II quads have just launched and based on the AT review article Intel is apparently planning a quiet price cut that will knock the Q9550 down to the current price of the Q9400 ($270). Go read the article (on the main page) if you want more details.

Meh, that's a small cut.

No quads for me :(
