Which IDE plug is master and which is slave? Does it matter?

Wow, 2.5 years or so on the Abit KT-7 with 4 IDE got me spoiled. Only have 2 IDE controllers now.

SO, 1 controller is sharing a CD-Rom and a HD. How do I set it up? CD Rom on the middle connector, HD on the end set to Master on the jumpers?

Thanks, and damn I feel dumb about now

You are correct. At the end put the HD with its jumpers set to Master and in the middle put the CDROM with its jumpers set to slave.

Ahhhh, jumpers what a wonderful idea... I think I'll shoot the idiot who came up with that idea now!

It not advised to have a HDD and Optical device (CD, DVD) operating on the same IDE channel for performance reasons. Consider this especially when burning CDs (assuming your drive is a burner and not just a plain cd-rom) since there will have to be a read, then write, then read, (alternating) instead of a continuous flow. (Since ide can only perfrom one function at a time, as opposed to SCSI). Keep your optical and hard drives on separate channels.

The cable can be hooked up either way as the Jumpers make the difference and what hkazemi26 states is for old MoBo's newer ones can have them hooked together without degradation. In fact if you burn on the fly it is better to have the Opticals set on seperate IDE channels.

Well, guess I have a OS problem. See, the reason i ask is my logical drive F (Which is my second HD in full) keeps coming up as inactive when I boot in Winblows. Go to Disk Manager, reactivate it and it comes online reporting errors. This didnt happen till I upgraded motherboards, so I dont think its a physical issue in terms of the errors. Thought maybe jumpers would have been the problem.
Any ideas why the logical drive alwasy starts inactive and once online reports errors? Asus A7N8X running Win2K AS.

Is there another OS on the Drive?...What's your PSU Power?...Are the jumpers set correct?...Did you check and hook the cables the right way?

I plan on migrating to SCSI / SATA, so dont really wanna drop any money into more PATA equipment. Also, its not a huge deal to me, more importantly then having to initialze the volume every time I reboot is whether the data is safe. Long as I dont loose the data, I really dont care. I mean, I would prefer I didnt have to but....
Lets just say, out of all the problems I could have, if this is the worst I get I'll be damned happy!
