Hello,

I have an Asus A7V133 motherboard and am wondering which controller nad driver I should use with my new Western Digital 120GB JB (the one with 8MB cache) drive? I won't be RAIDing it, but on the board there is the standard VIA controller as well as the Promise controller. I think both are capable of ATA100. But is one better/faster than the other? Also, is there a recommended driver for each? I know the VIA can use the driver that came with XP, there is also the 4-in-1 driver pack, as well as the IDE Miniport. I just want to know which controller/driver will give me the best and most reliable performance.

Thanks!

if you dont have lots of ide drives then i would just disable the onboard promise controller and use the via ide controllers (they are just as fast as the promise)

but if you have several drives you would get better performance with not having one harddrive slave off the other.

personally i use the winxp with the via 4in1 drivers (in winxp i dont think the 4in1s install all 4 parts, it just installs what is needed for winxp)

My hard drive is the only one on the primary VIA controller and a DVD and CDRW drive are both on the secondary VIA controller.

I have the miniport driver currently installed so maybe I should uninstall it and go with the 4-in-1.
