I was wondering what IDE channel should I put my hard drive on and which one should the CD burner go on? Should the hard drive go on the primary one?

are you booting this drive?
in a single hdd/single CD setup you can make one master, and one slave.
(hdd as master)
or you can use 2 ribbons and make the CD-ROM a secondary master.
but if you are booting off the hdd, recommended you set it to master on the primary channel.

Just as Yield stated... If these are the only 2 Drives in you Puter and assuming the HD is your mainvein (boot) then I would set the HD as the Primary Master and the CDRW as the 2ndary Master.

what about 2 HDD and 2 CD?

I've heard different things - One guy said put the 2 CDs together on the secondary channel and the HDDs on primary, someone else said put the HDDs as masters on the 2 channels and the CDs as slaves.

Does it matter?

1 optical, and 1 hdd on each IDE channel.

you pick on master/slave
just make sure your boot drive is master.

Best config is like this.

IDE1 (Primary) - Primary HD (Master), CD Burner (Slave)
IDE2 (Secondary) - CDROM (Master), Secondary HD (Slave)

Based on the following traffic assumptions (which apply to ~95% of users).

1) CDROM to HD > Software Installations
2) CDROM to CD Burner > DAE and CD 'Backup'
3) Primary HD to Secondary HD > Backup, etc....
4) Secondary HD to CD Burner > Archive etc...

Wow, you cracked the IDE code! Your setup up IS the fastest!

In case someone doesn't know. IDE shares its bandwidth with whatevet two devices are on it's channel. So if you ever got two devices running at the same time on the same channel it would be running at half it's bandwidth! <~~ Hope that's right.

THanks Thorin!:)

I'm confused about one thing though in thorins config - why the 2nd hard drive as slave rather than master?

Now do you think I'll expeirience any slow downs if I used a 5400rpm hdd with 24/10/40 CDRW?

4) Secondary HD to CD Burner > Archive etc...

Because I do have two 7200rpm hard drives, but I want to give my sis's comp a little boost -by letting her have the 7200rpm hdd. But do you think I'll experience any slow downs? This second drive will only be used for archiving/downloads/burning- that's all.

Thanks!

Well it isn't split (ie not 50/50). It's that only one drive can 'talk' at a time and the other drive has to wait.
THanks Thorin!
No Problemo that's what we're here for :)

It doesn't have to be. But for Installs, DAE, etc you want the CD to have priority over anything that might be accessing the Secondary HD (playing mp3s or whatever). In the end it doesn't matter if the CD is master or the 2nd HD really, basically you just want to make sure that the majority of your traffic is across channels not within channels. Make sense?

I doubt you'll really notice since you won't be running any huge applications (Photoshop etc) off it or anything, it should be fast enough for a few mp3s, divx or whatever....
