I'm building a machine for photo-journaling and want to use Intel's i5 CPU w/onboard IGP. I see that the 661 has a higher core frequency for graphics, cost a bit more too. Will there be that much of a difference from the 661 (900 MHz) and say a 650 (733 MHz)? Thank in advance!

Considering how much the i5-661 costs, you're waaaaaay better off just getting the i5-750 or i5-760 quad core and a cheap discrete graphics card. In fact, just get the quad core i5. Those dual core i5's are stupidly expensive.

I mean, seriously... the i5-661 is $1 more than the i5-760 (on newegg). Add a cheap discrete graphics card for $20-$50 and you'll have a significantly better system.

I have thought about that route. The 600s use less power and have at least a 3.2GHz clock (up to 3.4 w/Turbo boost) and use Hyper-threading, 4 threads. No Hyper-threading on the quads, they both use 4 threads.

Wait for SB. its a good 3x faster. We have seen 2x faster but we didn't see the show only a preview.

2 physical cores + 2 logical cores can't beat 4 physical cores.

^ Agree with blackmage about real physical cores vs HT logical cores. But OP appears to want the on-package IGP, so a proper quad isn't an option. AT's review of the IGP seemed to show very minor benefit from the extra graphics core speed; don't pay a premium for the 661!
 
I have the I5-760 Lynnfield in a Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3 LGA 1156 motherboard. I am using the Sapphire 100296HDMI Radon HD 4670 graphics card.
Everything is working just fine so far. I had it running a lot in the past 3 weeks.
I over clocked to 3.15.

My core temps are around 156F when using video rendering software otherwise the temps are around 105F.

What is the max the temps should be allowed to go to?
 
The i5-760 will turbo up to 3.46 anyways for singlethreaded apps, and you get the extra cache for single-threaded apps.

And the 661's TDP is only like 7W lower than the 750, which I imagine will be much more efficient in that it can complete a given workload faster and thus use less power overall.

This build will replace my wife's HP AMD Turion 64x2 laptop; my 9550 is still rockin'.

Just get an i3-530 or 540 and overclock it; can't beat the performance for the money. I've been using one for Photoshop etc. and it works great.
