Which HSF should I choose

I want to get a couple new HSFs for my 2 main PCs (P3 733 and Duron 650). The P3 currently has a Gorb and the Duron has the Retail HSF that came with it (Taisol 724). I will not be overclocking the P3 but I will on the Duron (Runs fine @ 800). I have narrowed my choices down to these 2, GW FOP38 ($22) and the Taisol 742 ($24). Will the 742 work with my P3 or not? Also, since the onboard temp measurements have been shown to be inaccurate, what is the best way to monitor CPU temps?

The Taisol should work with the P3. Also, either HSF will do fine, but the FOP38 is better. But it is VERY loud. So unless you don't mind the noise, get the FOP38. If noise is a prob, consider the FOP32-1 or the Alpha PAL6035.

To measure temp, the best way is to use a thermal diode and place it between the CPU and hsf. And then measure from there...I think. Something like that :)

taisols work fine for both, but the key is to put the thermal probe touching core edge, not just between heatsink and cpu pcb. Even there it will read significantly lowwer than actual full core temp, but it is infinately better than the socket-thermistor solution.

Where can I buy thermal probes at and how do I monitor the temp, with LCD read out? Also, I am pretty sure the FOP38 will fit on both of my boards (SE6 and KT7) since it is stepped design but will the Taisol fit on both?

You can get like a digital doc from millisec.com or places like that. Taisols can be bought from either inflowdirect.com or store.yahoo.com/taisol

Alternatively, you could get an extra thermsitor "cable" that can attach ot your mb, then use something like MBM to monitor that "headers" temp.

P.S. You only need to do this with the KT7. the SE6 has the ability to read the P3-Internal Diode.
