Which HR 05 to get

After finally getting a decent 680i from the RMA dept at evga I plan on doing a proper TIM NB SB Mosfet replacement with different NB and SB cooling. That damned NB fan is the loudest thing in that case so a 70MM or a 80 on the HR 05 would be a big improvement. Motherboard wise I know the Vanilla HR 05 didnt fit without some jimmying so the IFX seemed the logical choice.

I have a evga 8800gts G92 with the stock cooler so the dual slot design could mess with a tall SB sink so the evercool VC RF seems short enough to fit. I was tempted to use another HR to cool the SB but dependent on what comes down the pipe in the next two months with stepup I dont want to pigeon hole myself into strict space requirements.

Does anyone have any other recomendations for the 680i? That thermaltake spirit looks odd and the mounting mechanism looks off somehow, and that size of that fan would make it very loud I would assume. I saw the vantec iceberg for the SB as another option or the Swiftech MCX159 as a slightly more costly choice for the NB.

You're asking a few questions there and I think the best I can do is just make a general reccomendation and we can go from there. I would reccomend the standard IFX for your northbridge and the IFX-SLI for your southbridge. The offsetting of the main heatsink on the SLI should allow you to get it off to the side of the card without too much issue.

I've been using a JingTing chipforce cooler on my DFI NF4 board with a 7800GTR for a few years operating under this same principal and it works very well.

Thx for the reply Derwen, I didnt think about the SLI for the SB, the added space should leave room for a dual slot card. Would leaving the SB passive while actively cooling the NB be a bad idea? The airflow over that are on my TJ09 should be sufficient shouldnt it?

You've got a tj09 and you're air cooling? it's not a slouch in for air cooling, it's just the second most popular Ss case for water cooling, the tj07 being the most popular. Teh airflow coming off that midsection 120mm should be enough, *should*. I can't gaurintee it but, with a true NB/SB design, the SB won't be nearly as hot as the NB, especially if you won't be running SLI.

I dont plan on SLI anytime soon, If the G92 GTX sucks and its overpriced I could see getting another G92GTS but otherwise I would just step up to a single card. Thx for the help Derwen!

Anyone have a HR installed with a tuniq I can see pictures of? Ive looked around and havent seen what the clearance issues would be.

You didn't mention what motherboard you have. I could work out any clearance issues if I knew what motherboard you had.

I have the evga 680i A1 board with the lifetime warranty. This system has 2x1 ocz 1066 micron D9s, EVGA 8800gts 640, I planned on putting this system back in the TJ09 but may also put these parts into the Thermaltake Armour that I have sitting in a box. I dont really plan on SLI anytime soon but may sometime in the future so if at all possible Id like to have acess to both the top and bottom PCI lanes.

To clear a tuniq tower you may need to use an SLI on the northbridge, I can't say for sure, I would check on forums for other boards that use the refrence design, they'll all have the same clearance issues. With an SLI on the southbridge with the heatsink below the base when looking at the board you'll have plenty of room for SLI in the future.
