hey guys.. i'm so glad i found AnandTech, i would be screwed with out it. okay i've been doing som research lately and i found a couple good heatsinks for a xp2000+. i went through Blain's reviews extensively and came to the conclusion of these hs's:

Alpha PAL8045
- Good in the benchmarking area and OCing,
- 64dBa - Very very noisy.
- 16c load from a 61w source
- high price
- Screw into motherboard - more secure

Alpha PAL8045 w/ Orix Fan
- 80x80x25mm fan
- 19.9c load from a 61w source
- Extremely quiet - 47 dBa

Sibak AE-01-62B
- Evercool 7000rpm fan
- 44dBa - quiet!!!
- 32c idle; 35c load. (note: on a duron 900mhz)
- Copper core

Cool Jag JAC-212C / DYNATRON DC1206BM-0
- Basically the same hs
- 14.9c load from a 61w source
- 62 dBa - another loud fan

Millenium Glaciator
- 14.6c load from a 61w source
- 55 dBa
- fan built into heatsink - 7000rpm Delta fan
- $34 w/ Artic Silver II

These heat sinks are from a whole bunch of rounds up and i have seen. I hope someone can help me decide, any input is good input. I hope this helps out other people in my situation too. If you have anymore info on other fans please post.

Uh... I hope you ment AnandTech, unless you are happy about your antech case that is?

Anyhow I just bought a Thermalright AX-7 and it is awesome.

I have an Athlon XP 1700+ Overclocked to 1.74GHz (Athlon XP 2100+ speeds). It runs idle at 38C and with load doesn't go above 43C.

I use an Enermax variable 1000-3000RPM 80mm fan on the Heatsink. The AX-7 usually ranks rather high on the top HSF lists. Its a big HSF, but it looks nice and keeps my CPU nice and cool.

Just to follow your numbers, overclockers.com has the HSF tested on an 76.7 W source with a resulting 42.5C.

I know you have listed some pretty heavy duty HSF setups, but the THermalright AX-7 is a good choice without having to go over board.

:Q Damm man, you have low standards as to what "quiet" means.

Actually, it is a 80mm fan and spins @4000RPM, this is alot better than the 60mm screamers of old. I don't know if i'd say extremely quiet, more like extremely non-irritating.

i personally think 44 dba is loud. i am using the panaflo L1 with my alpha heatsink.. it's only 21dba. I have a 2100+ OC to about 1.8GHz and temp is around 51C.

the thermalrught AX-7 is just a heatsink, no fan. you have to supply the fan yourself (80mm).
if you do get it, and dont mind lots of noise(over 40dBA) then get a decent YS-Tech 80mm fan to go with it. or if you want silence, then get a Papst 80mm Fan(expensive are Papst).

i say go for the alpha with a low rpm fan
quiet and good
the fact that it is a larger heatsink makes it better with slower fans than the ax-7 even though the ax-7 looks cool and has a good design
the switech ones are good too but expensive
just make sure the alpha will fit yur motherboard first by checking there compatibility list
there is some degree of personal preference here too so just get what you feel like getting hehe

http://www.svcompucycle.com/ seems to have good prices
33 for the alpha
24.99 Ax-7
44.99 swiftech
then they charge extra for whatever fan you choose

newegg.com
28 for AX-7
49 alpha /w fan not in stock
55 swiftech

guess the first place has good prices
but there for comparison's sake

i read a review a couple months back and it actually outperformed the alpha by like 1 or 2 degress
which isn't much
also something to note is that the alpha heatsink does better with the fan sucking air off it than a lot of other heatsinks cause the thing that wraps around it
i like the big copper base on the switech and it looks like a damn science experiment heh
just more expensive then the others
