Depends on where the light source is, CRT could be worse than all (except a projector) if there is a bad reflection off the glass.

DLP = best (well, not really...but in comparison)
front projection out of the question
plasma = too expensive for poor quality (takes a lot of dough to get good image)
direct view is at the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality

I'm not familiar with hitachi's LCD offerings but they are known for making good displays.

Thing is all these different technologies have pros and cons. Find out what cons you can live with.

I was speaking of the LCD rear projection sets.
I have not encountered a pure LCD tv that I would want to watch daily.

This is all assuming a lack of adequate light control in the viewing area.

I can watch my LCD Rear Projection in bright light with absolutely no problems so I don't know where you are getting your information from.

THe LCDs are coing a long way, but the model you showed has a supposedly anti-reflective coating pane of glass that actually reflects mroe ethan it cloks😕

We were going to get that 50'' ultravision but will probably stick with the 50'' ultravision without htat glass. It is bordered by cheesy plastic (in comparison to that slic kglass face) but it still looks great.
No reflectiosn either😀

In the end though Plasma will be best, followed by LCD......DLP and directview use projection and not emission so they get drowned out by ole' mr. sunshine very easily🙁

My personal preference from looking at both kinds of sets.

The OP should look at as many sets a possible and decide what he prefers.

i gotta directview, but only cause im on a limited budget, well kinda (college student) its fvckin sweet tho, but its a beast, id like a plasma instead

Well, I can tell you for sure that LCD RPTV will be much better performing than a direct view having owned one for nearly two years. In fact, the LCD RPTV brightness is so bright that I have to jack it down severely because it hurts my eyes. I have no problems with the TV even in direct sunlight.

LCD RPTV

Washed out direct view HDTV with very little ambient light.

The two TVs above are ones I own or owned. The direct view was a top of the line Sony HDTV that cost me $2700. It was very difficult to see the picture with moderate lighting. Look how bad even ambient light affects the picture. I have no issues like that with my Panasonic LCD RPTV.

It does depend greatly on where your light source is located.
My prefenences are merely the product of my own observations.

The real question is how big of a TV the op wants and how much he wants to spend. I'm guessing the size reqirement will rule out direct view TVs and the choice will be between Plasma-DLP-LCD.

I have a 10 year old 32" direct view Ultravision now.
The ambient light will come from two windows with coverings. My wife vetoed the black paint idea. 😉 The coverings will cut the light down dramatically, but I have the same problem on my DV and it is annoying.
I want to upgrade to an HDTV as this will be the last TV I buy for a while.
I saw the one in my original link when I went to get my wife some XM accessories. I was blown away.

spidey07, thanks for the link, good info there.

Sex.

I've always heard that ambient light placed behind the TV would reduce eye strain, of course any light in front of the tv hass the possibility of washing out the picture and creating glare.
