Hello,

So I purchased a 2500k and it came bundled with a 1TB Caviar Blue 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" drive. I currently have a 640GB WD6401AALS Caviar Black. Capacity aside, which drive is better?

For a boot/system drive the WD6401AALS. I have two of them that my OS used to run on in RAID0. They were the best spinners I have ever used. Now, its SSD time.

My preference between the two would be the Black.

Blacks in general maybe but, not this model. Only 1TB and larger were in those benchmarks.

Now if really some sustain some Xfer rate
Try this setup 4x WD1001FALS 1TB drives and a Highpoint RocketRAID 3510 controller, running in Windows 7 x64.
You will get this

It was a response to Phynaz statement that WD Black's were loud. I read in some reviews that the 1, 1.5 and 2TB drives had noise issues. The 640 is not loud and is great all around. The benchmarks you posted prove that. The WD6401AALS is arguably the best Black Series drive ever made.

Well ....... since I have own all those HDD; I can say this.......
HDD noise is tad bit more.....
However even if the HDD are few centimeter away from your HDD the difference is not enough for person get affected.
Even $30 case and 5 foot away you would not able to tell the difference from WD 640 Black to WD 1TB Black.

if anyone has their case fans on high folding all day long i dont think how loud a hard drive is gonna matter chances are the fans are louder then the drive itself:p not gonna assume the op folds but thats another way to look at it,but i would pick western digital been using them since 2007 in every build, not a single failure yet, cant say that for the late maxtor and seagates ive owned sucks im using this 1tb seagate and the seek times simply blow ass

it comes down to:

320GB platter with more cache vs. 500GB platter with less cache
i've had the benefit of benchmarking single platter 320GB blacks, and a single platter 500GB blue
They both performed pretty close, but i'd give the nod to the blacks
Also the blue drive I tested made an annoying noise as well.

generally blue drives seem to perform about as good as previous generation blacks imo.
