Which HDD for OS and which for video? 10K vs 10K II

I have a system here with two SCSI HDDs.
1. 18.2GB Quantum Atlas 10K, Ultra 160, 2MB buffer
2. 18.2GB Quantum Atlas 10K II, Ultra 160, 8MB buffer, A/V rated

My question is which drive to load the OS and apps. on, and which drive to use as video storage?

The 10K is not A/V rated wheras the 10K II is. The 10K II is quieter and faster than the 10K. So, do I load up the OS on the 10K and have the 10K II as storage? Or do I load up the OS on the 10K II with the 10K as storage.

Is the storage drive just that, a storage drive and doesn't do any of the work. Therefore the 10K II should be the OS drive because the editing program would reside there and be doing the work. Or do I have it backwards?

The sky is blue....

Really you almost had me confused there.

What i would do is make the 10k @ the os drive. WHen you capture video etc capture to the 10k2 and make your modifications. When these are finished put the file on the10k for storage.

Just my suggestion. :)

Regis: Is that your final answer

Hanpan: no so here goes.

I have been thinking about this for the last couple of minutes and here is my conclusion.

The os drive runs the video editing program. Furthermore I believe when you open the file it is loaded into memory/ swapfile. Therefore any changes are made to memory and swapfile until you save the video. Since the swapfile in on the os drive (or if you have sufficient memory this is not a consideration) and the swapfile will be doing most of the hdd work, (other than caputer which should be done to your os drive as well and then sent to the other for storage) I would reccomend setting the faster (10kII) as the os drive and the slower(10k) as the storage drive. Since the 10k won't be accesed (assuming i'm rihgt whihc i may not be) until you save the file, it would preserve your hearing and give you better all around performance. I however make no guarantee's that this is the best combination and if someone will make arguments to the contrary I am happy to here them but after pondering this for a while, this seemed the most logical conclusion. :)

Since the OS drive will be accessed more frequently, it makes sense to use the faster 10K II there.

Sundog....I do alot of video editing (I do NLE as a side job) and I have the slower of my two drives running the os and other programs....the faster drive is strictly used only for DV capture.....I have been working this way for two years and this route has not failed me. The video capture (firewire or analog) needs to be able to stream to the faster drive otherwise you risk getting dropped frames.

As for the question about the swapfile...it reallys becomes irrelevant as long as you have a good chunk of ram (anything above 256 preferably 512 and up). When I work it Adobe Premiere, task manager normally shows it taking up 300+ ram while working on large projects.

Hope this helps
