I know I won't use 300gigs but I've heard the 16mb cache makes this drive close in performance to the Raptor drives (I just bought a 36gig one myself)...

Which one would you go for?

Thanks.

you can buy the maxtor for 90?? where where ??

Well, I like to compare the throughput rates of drives as well. But, as of late, Maxtor is getting silly with listing some platter transfer rates. On their website, they don't list them for this drive: http://www.maxtor.com/_files/m...dmax_10_data_sheet.pdf Western Digital does for theirs: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=57 Too bad nothing is listed for transfer rates from Maxtor, but I'd guess it's at the WDC level or lower. And the WDC drive seems to have slightly better access times.

And that 16MB cache won't make sustained throughput the same as the Raptor. There is no way that Maxtor drive will touch 72MB/sec _sustained_ throughput (which is what the Raptor gets). It might have more than that as a max transfer rate, but remember that is only max. Average will be a bit lower, and low will be a LOT lower. The Raptor's rate is 72MB/sec sustained. Plus the fact that the Maxtor latencies won't be able to touch the Raptor, spinning at 10k RPM.
