I need a new HD for my computer, I'll be installing my OS on it and I use the computer mainly for internet and games. If anyone could help me decide between the two I'd appreciate it.
I know the Maxtor has 16mb cache but I've heard they are pretty much even in a few benchmarks and I'd like to hear from a few people who actually have either of the drives too if possible, and not just the specs. thanks :)

Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 250GB SATA2 8MB 7200RPM NCQ

or

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250GB SATA 16MB 7200RPM NCQ

Personaly of those 2 I'd go w/ the HGST drive for a system drive it has better seek times and pretty similar STR.

Maxtor only has a 1 year warranty and frankly, IMO Maxtor is crap lately. If Hitachi gives you more than a year warranty go with them. If they only give you a year then forget them both and get a Seagate with a 3 year warranty.

IMO any HDD manufacturer that doesn't have enough faith in their product to warranty it more than 1 year is not worth buying from.

Sata2 does not do anything since it cannot be reached yet. Applications have shown that in some cases 16MB does make a difference, althought not always, and its a very slight difference. Sata2 is not worth it yet and neither is the extra 8MB.

Out of those two drives, I would get get the Hitachi since its faster. But Maxtor has a 250GB version of the Maxline, which has a longer warranty than the Diamondmax 10. It is also designed for 24/7 use. I would look into that.

Any particular reason why you have narrowed it down to those two drives and not Western Digital, Seagate, or Samsung? Just curious...

Anyways I've just seen too many Maxtor issues to recommend one, so I'd go with the Hitachi. Other than the 75GXP model I think the IBM (Now Hitachi) drives are pretty good.

Thanks for the input and votes everyone, I appreciate it. :)

The reason I narrowed it down to those two was because after reading reviews on Storagereview.com the Seagate I was looking at (Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 NCQ 200GB SATA 8MB Cache) didn't seem to perform that well and although I have only ever had Seagates in the past I can't really justify the extra price if there are other options that are better and cheaper. The Samsung I was looking at (Samsung SpinPoint P SP2004C 200GB SATA-II 8MB Cache) seemed to be a similar story and although it had low noise levels on it's side it was still fairly slow compared to other drives. According to reviews again the Western Digital I was looking at "lacks the pizzazz to match offerings from Maxtor and Hitachi test after test".

damn it, I found a good deal on a Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250GB SATA 8MB 7200RPM NCQ so I've added that to the poll, sorry guys. Would you rate the
Seagate over the Hitachi?

If you get the Maxtor...I'll vomit. They are the worst piece of computer equipment (not just HD's...ANY type of computer equipment) that is made. It WILL fail on you and it WILL corrupt your data.

The only Hitachi drives I've owned have been in laptops; so I can't honestly comment on them. But I can confidently recommend any Seagate HD; I've been using them (and some Western Digitals) for all the computer builds I've done for years. They're the most reliable and sturdy, imho.

Good Luck.

Yes and most likely watch it climb ;)

Even though I am a fan of Seagates, I can't help but notice that the review of that HD isn't very good though.

Fastest tranfer rates are nothing to sneeze at and with seagates unprecident 5yr warranty and reliability I can wait a few mili seconds on those other Benches ;)

Of those 3 drives I'd still go w/ the HGST drive it destorys the seagate drive completely in the benchmarks, if performance is at all important to you I'd stay away from the 7200.8 series. altho they are quiet and reliable w/ good warrenties their performance doesn't really compare to the Maxtor or HGST drive.

Edit: see the Storage Review drive database.

Unless things have changed Hittachi does not have advanced rma. That means if your hd goes out it will be 2-3 weeks minium before you get it back.

SATAI, SATAII, SATA250 are all completely meaningless.

I like the Maxtor DM10 250 GB SATA NCQ. Unfortunately it has had issues with the A8N-SLI D mobo and some other nForce 4 chipsets in regards to hard drive detection during startup. However I have only had the problem like 5 times since I got this in a year. Usually you just have to cold boot it twice and it'll be fine, it's a minor annoyance at best for such a good-performing drive. This doesn't happen with non-nForce4 mobos.

I'm hoping to order one or the other tonight, my mind still isn't quite made up so if I could get a few more votes and opinions explaining why I should go for a certain one I'd appreciate it :)
