Which HD: Maxtor 40 gig (7200) or Quantum 40 gig (7200)

I need a nice new hard drive for my server (no, it isn't mission critical, and space/cost is the issue, not speed/reliability, so SCSI it wont be), and I'm having a hard time deciding between these two. Both are the same price.

Which one would be quieter/more reliable/faster, etc. ?
I've currently got a 20gig Maxtor, and have had no problems with it, but am leaning toward the Quantum simply because I've heard their quality is better than Maxtors.

-And for those of you who would shout 'But Maxtor owns Quantum!', I know that. The drives are still representative of the companies pre-merge though.

There really isn't anything different between those 2 drives. I'd go with Maxtor, because if something does go wrong, they have a much better/easier replacement policy.

I own one of each - The Quantum is MUCH louder than the Maxtor. They're both fairly new and I've had no problems with either one so can't say much about reliability.

If your drive is that much louder, you may have gotten a lemon buybye. The AS is supposedly on the same noise level as the competition.

The AS is in fact slightly louder than the GXP75's and late model DM+.

Keep in mind the Quantum MIR... I just ordered 2 40Gig drives... adds up to be 75$ MIR... So that would be one thing to concern...

I haven't tried the Maxtors but I have a GXP and AS and both are VERY quiet and even though the GXP rules benchmarks I can't tell the difference in performance. The AS is cheap these days with rebates but Quantum takes a while to deliver.

Any reason why you didn't consider IBM in your options? Or did you already cross them out.

If you get the Quantum AS, make sure it's with the HBD bearings (fluid).

I would choose hmmmmmm NEITHER..... Both drives are junk... GO with the IBM GXP 46.1 GIG I have.. Quiet, Fast and Reliable. What else can you ask for in a drive.

Maxtor has gotten some great reviews and improved their image in the last 2 years. But ... Western Digital has a 3yr Warranty and a great RMA dept. if needed. As often as I whack my HD,best value for my buck!

I did a holistic drive performance survey using an weighted average of various StorageReview benchmarks of current-generation ATA/100 units and confirmed the popular sentiment that the IBM 75GXP is the fastest available drive. At 30G, it's also not as expensive as people think. The other important conclusion was that all current ATA/100 drives perform remarkably similar -- within about 9% of eachother.

Oh, and as far as noise, any current-generation IDE drive will be fine. The Quantum LM Plus was the last "noisy" IDE drive.

I strongly recommend the Maxtor. I have used a number of Maxtor drives recently and they have all been excellent. I had one that made a loud whine (no real problem) and they replaced it without a problem. BTW, I have had very bad luck with Quantums.

What does that mean? This is the drive I am hoping to get... Quantum Fireball Plus AS 40GB from outpost... How do I find out?

I'd go with Maxtor than Quantum. The former has been improving as of late which I can;t say the same for the latter, IMHO. Quantums ATA66 was neck-to-neck with tehe &quot;mighty&quot; IBM drive not so long ago but their recent drive didn't have it like that so to speak.

Tom's hardware just did a March HD review and the Quantum AS had measured quieter operation than the Maxtor+60. Might take that with a grain of salt as a lot of his other numbers seem suspect as usual when it comes to HD reviews.

The reason I crossed IBM off my list is simply because I'm buying locally, and they are only able to get stock of Quantum, Maxtor and WD.

As long as you dont get WD, you're fine. And ignore those who disses Maxtor and Quantum as junk, because they make some of the best hard drives out there, as good or even better than IBMs. Quantum is now merged with Maxtor, so you wont go wrong with either, they have some technological differences but mostly remain similar. About noise level, the new Fireball Plus AS is very quiet, I dont know if I have the HBD bearing version, but its quieter than my DM+40 which is famous for its low noise level. Their newest HD line perform quite similar to each other, with Maxtor holding an edge over Quantum, so I would opt for the Maxtor, if price is an issue then see if the Quantum is more affordable.
