Which has better onboard video? Biostar M7VIG or ASUS A7N266-VM

The Biostar M7VIG is listed as having "S3 Savage 4" video.

The ASUS A7N266-VM is listed as having "GeFORCE2" video.

Actually, it's more complicated than that.
I have 2 computers where I want to give 1 of them to some friends. They're a young family so they want a pc that can do the usual office/net stuff and educational games for the 6 year old.
Both PCs have each an AMD 1600+ cpu and are using Win98. Whereas the ASUS has 128MB of DDR SDRAM, the Biostar has 256MB PC133 SDRAM.
I want to give the better one to them.

I would say the GeForce2 Video is better than the Savage 4. Though since the Biostar system has 2x more ram, I would say that system would be better for the uses intended. They are not going to need DDR ram for those uses, and the Savage 4 is just fine for things such as educational games. The added ram will allow them for more stability for things such as web surfing and word processing (especially if they're doing both)

The GF2MX-level (NOT GF2-level like Asus calls it) video of the nForce chipset is going to be better for any 3D gaming. Aside from that, they're probably about the same in everything else 2D. Savage4 video isn't all that bad (although the M7VIG is actually "ProSavage8" video integrated). They're probably about the same level in 2D performance and resolution/refresh support.

I would say the DDR memory is better for someone using Win98 and just doing average office stuff and kids' games. It may provide a little more responsiveness. But really, either system will work just fine for them. A 128MB PC2100 module can be had fairly cheaply too, if they start to feel that it needs a bit more. And of course, you've got the choice of either giving them the one with more memory, or the one with slightly better video. They can't have both. 🙂

Gice them the Asus based system. It is just better in all departments.

I love both boards... and have built 5+ systems with the boards. Both are rock stable and I like the nForce if I have someone who will want to game a little. However, if they don't want to game I get them the Biostar and save them a couple bucks so they can upgrade down the road. It all come down to what you will use it for.
