Whish has better graphics? a P4 2ghz laptop with ati 64mb 9000 graphics or a netbook 1.6ghz atom with the 3150 integrated graphics? i assume the P4 would be better processor wise, but how about the graphics?

For what purpose?

3150 is uber slow, but my main beef with 3150 is the very poor resolution support.

However, I suspect the Atom/3150 laptop would probably last much longer on battery or be lighter or something.

the more modern gpu will handle modern codecs better but an old p4-2ghz with a fast software decoder will make more heat (aka eat power) and handle it in cpu. there are a few commercial codecs that are faster than ion chipsets.

so it Depends. Kinda why i put a q6600 in my HTPC - it can decode 4K video in cpu so i'm good for 4-10 years - and it can do the latest chrome craziness (ogg/theora) even though my Geforce 430 can't accelerate all of those formats.

The old P4 laptops that were netburst - those are heat monsters - so be clear if you mean p4-netburst-2ghz or pentium mobile-2ghz. big difference.

so more pro's it seems to stick with the atom over the P4. machine doesnt get used for more than internet useage really

then i'd stick to the p4 if that's the case. its far more powerful. just clean the heatsink and video (if applicable) heatsink out. overheating is nasty when they get all dusty from being old/etc.

ion is painful. it's like going back to celeron days (the old celeron's). big step back in time. very very limited bus. the p4 had a very generous bus

The Ati 9000 64mb is a 2003 year DirectX 9.0b compliant graphics chip as far as I remember. Scores about 7500 3DMarks in 3DMark2001.

It won't do wonders but will likely be faster then the integrated 3150. Older games like Return to Castle Wolfenstein should work just fine on it (played it on my Radeon 7500).

It's all this flash modern websites use that boggs down such older graphics chips. I have a Sony GRT996ZP laptop with a 3.2GHz P4 with HT and a mobile Geforce FX5600 and it's fine for most part, just flash bogs it down, as well as MPEH4 H.264 playback. I keep it as a relic from the past, fantastic build quality compared to today's stuff 🙂

What do you plan to use it for?
