Which Hardware + Operating system is suitbale for large I/O and data processing application

Hi all

I need to make some comparison b/w different available platform to come up with a solution for an application.

It will be a data management application which would required very huge amount of data to be read from tape devices. That is large I/O operation with good speed.
Therefore , I/O should be of much much consideration, as well as powerful CPU, Bus speed etc.

I need to find out the combinition of Hardware + Operating System that could provide good I/O performance as well as bus and CPU speed.

Tape devices do have specific speed which is independent from hardware. so this is not isse.

Now my first question is that,
Which avialable hardware platform + chipset could be suitable for such sort of application?? I have example of platforms like, IBM RS 6000, IBM AS/400, OR Intell based machine Sun/Solaris etc.

Second question is that,
once we come up with some hardware platform, What operating system would be suitable for this type of application?? for example, Linux or AIX 5.2 or Solaris??

It would be great if any body mention some resource/paper/success story, that could make a comparison between these hardware and software platforms for such type of mission critical applications? describing Pros and Cons of avialable options.

thanks in advance

Don't go with Slowlaris. It will have absolutely bulletproof stability, but not fast at all.

SPARC/Solaris has awesome I/O speed compared to x86/anything, as long as you avoid their newer cheap PCI boxes. I wouldn't use it for number crunching, but for serving files, mail, and so forth, SPARC/Solaris is great.

As for the original question, I'd check LISA (Large Installation System Administration) conference proceedings, where they often have papers on topics like this. Here's one old paper on a similar topic: http://www.backupcentral.com/e10k-lisa98.html

What kind of I/O, exactly? Datebase? Filesystem I/O? Mostly read or read and write?

What kind of safety requirements?

For your bandwidth issues, you'll probably want to look into Fibre Channel devices. I have a good friend who is extremely knowledgable consultant and can definitly help you. PM if you're interested..
