ok so I just bought a used L400 from another member on here. I havent gotten it yet but I know it has only a 10gb drive. Dell has a special today, and they have some good deals on notebook drives. In particular

Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM Travelstar Notebook Drive = $126 (A0398344)

Seagate 40GB Momentus 5400RPM Notebook Drive w/8MB Cache = $77 (A0242099)

Toshiba 40GB 5400RPM Notebook Drive w/16MB Cache $81 (A0398575)

I was wondering which one should I get? Is the 7200rpm gonna make much difference over the 5200rpm? The lappy is only 700mhz, but would having the 7200 reduce a potential bottleneck (i think it has a 4500rpm in it now).

TIA

Get the Hitachi thats a really good deal on that drive. Its $168 currently on Newegg. The biggest difference between laptop hard drive speeds is the jump from 4200 to 5400. The 7200 for that price though really can't be beat.

Get the 7200rpm drive. It's worth it. You will notice a difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm and the 7200rpm drive uses about the same amount of power as the 5400rpm

I have an older IBM 20gb 5400rpm drive in the exact same lappy and it is nice and fast, if the 7200rpm doesn't suck too much juice or get to hot then i'd go for it.
