Two of the first - RAID-0
One of the second for a single drive.
What chipset are you putting it on? . . . Maybe RST a small SSD?

I don't have a motherboard yet. But I want to build a computer within the next few months and right now I'm just playing around with ideas to see what I want to do.

Would it be better to have 2 of these:

vs

1 of these:

Any thoughts or opinions?

Can I ask why you are looking to HDD rather than a decent SSD?

You can get a good 256GB for ~$140-160 if you look out for deals. Something like a Samsung 830/840 or a Crucial M4 would massively outperform 2 Raptors, and you wouldn't have to worry about the added boot time and latency introduced by a RAID controller.

Yep.. once you go solid state.. HDD based OS's seem far less than optimum and almost feel broken in comparison. Windows accellerators can only do so much and even the fastest HDD can't compare to the slowest smallest SSD.

Well I actually was planning on getting an SSD also.

Here was my theory. I was thinking a smaller SSD just for booting windows off of. Then 1 of the raptors for games to reduce loading time since I could not fit it all on the SSD. And then a 3rd hard drive for everything else(music, videos, docs, etc.), although now that I think about it, I'm guessing I wouldn't need a 2nd Raptor for the "everything else" storage.
