Hi to all.....
Which among these is the best Hdd(space is not consideration that is i will settle for 40GB if its better then 80GB in performance)
Here are the choices( NO SATA drives not available here in INdia yet)
1) seagate barracuda ata100 80GB 7200RM st380011a
2) Samsung ata100 7200 rpm 80GB sp8004h
3) samsung 7200 rpm 40GB sp4002h

Gotta select from these only. Maxtor D540X-4k is available but by order only. IF its far better then above then only i will order.
Which should i go for? Which is most reliable?
Thanks in advance.....

IMO reliability is the same. I think the Samsung actually has a longer warranty, but they won't deal with end users - they'll tell you to bring it back to where you bought it from, which can be a problem because many places will turn around and tell you to contact the manufacturer. I'm not too familiar with Samsung but they usually trail Seagate in performance, while Seagate trails all other manufacturers. I think the Samsung drives are a 40GB/platter drive with 2MB cache while the Seagate drive you listed uses 80GB/platter (meaning sustained transfer rate will be higher) and is available with both 2MB and 8MB cache. The one you mentioned is the 2MB cache version. If you can get the ST380013A model, that's the one with 8MB cache. Obviously that one would perform better.

1, 2, 3 in the order you listed. Seagate like Zap stated (try for the 8MB cache) is the Queitest

well samsung comes with 3 years warranty and seagate 1 year.
What i want to ask is what is the rejection rate in 2nd and 3 d year?(

I read somewhere that if the disk has to go then it will go in the

first year itself. Is it true?)
Also then is warranty therefore a consideration in buying?(Obviously

samsung will win there)

And lastly are the 7200RPM drives stable. I had previously 5400 rpm

seagate barracuda 8.4GB and well it served me well for more then 3

years.(No bad sectors and all). Are 7200 rpm drives of the same

reliability(of seagate and samsung). Do they develop bad sectors any

faster?

Go with Samsung HD cuz I had no problem with Samsung HD in the past until I got Seagate last year and last week I bought Matrox HD. Don't bother Western Digital I had problem with it before.
