Which Graphics Card should I upgrade to? ATI or nVidia...

Here's the skinny.

I have an LCD 17" screen which has a native resolution of 1280 x 1024 and do not plan on changing it just yet. What I am after is a graphics card that will in the short-term run at 1280 x 1024 with the highest FSAA (8x or 16x) and 8x Anisotropic Filtertering with acceptable framerates. Lets say 60fps for now.

There are 3 options I'm wishing to explore and these are -

ATI's 9800Pro 256MB
nVidia's GF 5900Ultra 256MB
Keep my Gainward GF4 Ulta/750 XP 128MB and wait for nV40/R420 or whatever

What do you think?

IMO this product cycle missed as there are NO heavy hitter titles that are MUST HAVE POWER TO PLAY games. Your current card should be fine for a time. It probably depends on how badly you want to play HL2 with all the eye candy turned up. I am waiting for a while. BTW I have the same card you do currently.

I sort of fancy the 9800Pro to be honest but I guess TourGuide is correct really particularly if the next Gen Hardware is just round the corner...

HL2, Doom3 and a Game called Stalker will be my next purchases and yeah, full eye candy is required. When is it likely we will see the next generation of graphics cards in the stores.

😉

Why does everybody say the 9800 Pro is faster than the 5900 Ultra when you apply FSAA + AF???

Just looking over the most recent review I can find the 5900 Ultra won hands down with both FSAA + AF turned up. The only time it lost was in UT2003 at 1600X1200. And then it was about 5%.

Overall the 5900 Ultra is faster than the 9800 Pro. If you turn off FSAA+AF it is no contest.

Save some money and go for a 9800 non pro, great deal. But actually you have a decent card as it is that will play all games very well. It would be wise to wait a little more, half life 2 will still look great on your rig. After looking at your specs though..... Maybe a new springdale and 2x256 ddr might be a better upgrade for you. Try overclocking that processor some too.

what for 9900 pro 🙂

Shady06 any rumour sites to check out on that. WHen is it likely the next ATI gen. GPU's will be available? 😉

i dont remember where i read it, but rumor is that it is 12 pipelines and will be released at the time HL 2 is released cuz HL 2 is gonna come in the bundle.

as you can see from mem's review, the 9800 pro and 5900 ultra perform almost identical. the only difference is that the 9800 pro is cheaper
