which graphics card should I get?

I currently have a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB and its obviously fallen behind a bit in recent years. My budget is $250 or below.

The obvious choice is the Geforce 6600 GT and X700. But I want your opinions.

The general consensus is that the 6600GT outperforms the X700. However, either would be an improvement over the 9800 Pro. The 6600GT has Shader 3, which would be reason enough to get it over the x700 IMO.

The X700 Pro is about the same as a 9800 Pro, and the 6600GT isn't that much more powerful. If you want a worthwhile upgrade, get an X800XL for ~$250. It's a great bang for your buck, and is almost as powerful as a 6800GT.

Yes, I never really considered the x700 as a option since its basically a slightly faster Radeon 9800 Pro, which I have.

Good points. I was thinking of the same thing. I'm going to do something at the moment so I don't have much time, but can someone please link a review of a comparison between a Radeon 9800 Pro and Geforce 6600GT. Just need some benchmarks. Appreciated.

Thanks. That looks very tempting. Heh

i have a 9800 pro, and i dont feel the slightest bit "behind" at all. Nothing even stresses my system. Although I dont need my games at 1600x1200 or 4xx AA and I still manage to avoid hemorrhaging.

Seconded. Hot deals has deal for eVGA 6800 that is quite unlockable.

Well, after seeing the benchmarks, a plain vanilla 6800 is not that much faster than a 9800 Pro. Sure its faster, but is it worth a full upgrade?

The Radeon X800 Pro is considerably faster than the Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB, so it may be a better bet? But it is above my budget.

You may be right. I may or may not put off buying another graphics card, but I know my system will be faster and more ready for Battlefield 2 since I upgraded my RAM from 512MB to 1GB. I will try to avoid it if I can, but right now, I have a urge to add more graphics muscle to my rig. 😎

oh yeah you ain't behind. GF3 Ti500 here.

lol now that is a bit behind

I remember how great the GF ti500 was ... 3 years ago 🙂

You probably can play most games however, and that aint bad

x800xl = best bang for buck and is awesome vid card.

I went with 6600GT as it does what I want just as well (well...90 vs 120 FPS in games...gets a w/e in my book)

This is a good one. It doesn't have the 9800pro, but it does have the 9800XT which is slightly faster so it'll give you an idea about where you stand.

gigabyte also makes a fanless x800xl, which i got. it's great, add maybe thirty or forty bucks to your budget and you can add a lot more graphics power.

or $100 Text

x800xl is not 50% faster than a 6800 and not worth the extra $100
