I am looking at a gaming system using a 5820k. No 4k. Using a Dell U2410 as a monitor. Originally was going to go with a 980ti but with the next generation GPU coming out later this year now having second thoughts. I there a middle of the road GPU that can still play games on max settings? Lately have only been playing WOT at standard definition since my system is so old. Probably would play games like COD, Battlefield, Diablo, Far Cry with a new system. Recommendations?

Generally those that have a decent budget but don't want to stretch it to the 980 Ti look at the Radeon 390 or the GTX 970. Or if you really want to save money you can look for a used Radeon 290 which is essentially an underclocked 390 with only 4GB.

If you plan to jump on Polaris or Pascal (AMD and Nvidia's future GPUs) relatively early then I'd recommend finding a cheap aftermarket Radeon 290. If you think you might keep it for some time, or you don't want to shop used, then I'd recommend the Radeon 390 since the 8GB may age better. The GTX 970 is comparable to these cards but on average is slightly slower than the 390 and it has less video memory. It is attractive though if you want a card that uses less power, at least while actually gaming (idle difference is usually about the same), or if there's a Nvidia feature you like.

OP, if you play mainly Gameworks games or like some of the NV features then get a used GTX 970. If you don't, get a used 290.

r9 280x/r9 380x and r9 390/gtx 970 are worth getting to tide you over till AMD and Nvidia next gen flagships.

The 390's are highly recommended these days, though I have never used one myself.

Where I would go these days if I were looking for a new card at least, and spare change.

Have been using a 280X here a long time now on the main rig.

I'd get a used 290. That way when you sell it again you aren't paying the "New" tax

Yes try to avoid the insane "new tax" that you will pay for any new GPU, especially with some exciting GPU tech coming out kind of soon.
