Ive out of the GPU market for quite sometime and i was looking for a good/cheap upgrade for my rig ( my current rig is not updated on my sig )

Intel i7 Quad Core
8GB of Giel RAM
1TB HD

I want to replace the ATI 4870 i currently have but i don't know to what?

I m looking to spend $250 MAX and i would like to stay ATI, not out of loyalty more of laziness to switch 'sides' so to speak lol, BUT if NVidia gives me more bang for my buck at that price by alol means im game for a switch.

The games im looking to run as best as i can out of the card i buy are:

Star Wars The Old Republic
Battlefield 3 <---which i run pretty decently so far but i know it could run even better

Which card would you guys suggest?

In 5 days AMD will be annoucing their next cards and we think its being released in January. Its probably worth seeing what they have to say before you buy a 6000 or 500 series card.

6950 2GB ($~250). There really isnt a better option outside of a GTX 580 for absolute performance.

Does anyone think the next generation Nvidia will have a video card as powerful as the GTX 460 that will use less power (and still be downward compatible with Directx9)?

Definitely.

Even if they don't change the CUDA cores to improve them, a full node shrink means they can deliver 460 performance for close to half the power consumed.

Hey all,
I had decided to wait on the new card announcements but havent really found or read up on any of the latest news? Should i still go for a 6950 2gb or what of the new cards would you recommend?

AMD only announced their highest-end GPU, the 7970. And nVidia is probably still 6 months away from launching their next generation series.

So nothing has really changed, the 6950 2GB is still probably the sweet spot for $/perf.
