which gpu for folding

which one is better for folding/price?

These deals end today I think so any quick ideas would be great!! I don't know what goes into figuring out what is important for gpu folding.

The Second option is the better video card of the two but I'm not a folder and can't tell how it does at folding. I know it does pretty good at seti

Thats prob better than my 8800gts 640mb. If I go that expensive then I might as well get a nice 150 gaming card

So basically the better it games the better it is for folding?

More or less, because the more stream processors it has for gaming, the more that can crunch.

It seems like GPU prices are hitting rock bottom lately. Maybe I should just wait for a card that can play crysis on high and swap out my old 8800gts. But at least I know to stay with nvidia.

That is try. With 260's hitting less than $200, I'm gonna have to buy one or two more, if only for future machines.

That is try. With 260's hitting less than $200, I'm gonna have to buy one or two more, if only for future machines.

Sorry to thread hijack, but would my HTPC be better off running 3x Folding@Home CPU clients on a Q9400 with 1x nVidia 9500GT GPU client, or 4x Folding@Home CPU clients? Or, can I run 4x CPU and 1x GPU without effecting the CPU clients' speeds?

9500GT isn't going to produce many ppd. Stick with the CPU.

EDIT: Just to clarify - these days the WUs have gotten tougher - I wouldn't recommend crunching with anything below a 9800GT. And if you're spending money to up your ppd - go for a GTX 260, those have about the best ppd/$ available today. And make sure you get a card from EVGA/XFX/BFG with a lifetime warranty (don't forget to register it!!) - folding puts a lot of stress on cards (especially the fan - I've got an 8800GS I need to RMA as the fan has started clicking).

Yeah, the HTPC is in the living room, so anything louder than my Zalman VF700 running at 5V on the 9500GT is a no-no. A GTX 260 with a stock fan isn't silent. Thanks for the information and I'll just let my Q9400 do all the work. 🙂

On a side note, I'm quite impressed with myself building my HTPC. I used the Zalman VF700 @5V for the video, a PC Power and Cooling 500w Silencer for the PSU, and a Zalman 9500CNPS for the CPU (I use the BIOS fan controls to regulate temps and fan speed). I also have a 92mm Antec Tri-Cool fan in the front of the case (Antec Solo), which is set to low (low/med/high are the options). This HTPC can handle anything I throw at it and the temps stay very cool. It is actually more quiet than my PS3 (which is pretty silent itself).
